I have a big red banner in my seller hub saying "Add your tax information to your account to get compliant with UK digital sales reporting legislation, and to avoid upcoming restrictions". I'm a registered business seller selling handmade items. Thanks in advance.

I'm assuming your question is do you need to do anything?
You need to follow the banner instruction and make sure your tax information is added.
Have you uploaded your Unique Taxpayer Reference/ National Insurance/ Company information/ VAT information?
If not then pay attention to the warning and do it. If you have, just double check all fields are completed.

ebay has started to ask for seller's National Insurance numbers as part of the process of passing our sales information to HMRC. It ties our accounts to National Insurance numbers.

Definately do as they ask you or they will restrict your selling

Not received that as yet. To be honest getting sick of eBay altogether.

Not had it, not doing it.

We have had that banner, if the same one follow the instructions and add your Nino. (National insurance no.)
if you don’t add it your payouts are put on hold until you do. It takes seconds to do. It’s part of the oecd/hmrc reporting.

We have had the banner, looks like Ebay are cracking on with this roll out.

At least two issues with that stance.
1. As said, your payments will be held until you comply, and
2. I suspect that there will be a flag on the data of those that didn't comply, so you need to be very sure that your tax position is water tight.

Took 2 seconds and its clear, put in NI number and press enter all done. I assume they will be asking everyone who's being reported to hmrc so nothing to worry about.
From what I gather they got an extension for sending sellers info so started with new sellers and older sellers will be requested assumably any time now.
At the end of the day ebay hold more than enough info on us for hackers to do an awful lot so adding a NI number to that isn't going to make a great deal of difference. Ive only ever used it for taxes + benefits in my adult lifetime I think and both were pretty lousy.

Thanks very much to you and all the above. I'll just fill it in. Thanks again

I am so glad ebay are finally doing this! There are so many 'private' sellers in my category operating big businesses and avoiding fees and/or paying tax!
They've been undercutting my prices for months as they're saving this money and have almost put me out of business!
I also have a private account where I'm selling off old clothes, no longer used electricals etc and some freebies I've received like perfume samples etc. so I too have this banner.
I have sold a few items to make up the difference for private items I sold on my business seller account, which I declare in my tax return (literally a couple of hundreds of pounds worth).
I have gone over the £1k limit by a few hundred pounds - I'm hoping if ebay are giving HMRC a breakdown of what I've sold, I won't have done anything wrong?

As long as what you have sold, is nothing to do with your business and is just stuff you are basically getting rid of, then there is nothing to worry about in regard to HMRC.
This income should be reported on your tax return, but it's not that big a deal, unless it's a lot of money.

It really isn't a lot of money. As I said, the few items that were business related, I will be adding to my tax return anyway.
Do I need to report the clothing etc that I've sold? I'm pretty sure that selling anything personal doesn't count as income you need to report?

Even if it did I doubt they'd care, as long as you are doing a tax return and the numbers are not wildly different, after all I dont think they are doing it to precisely match ebay with tax returns more catch those that are not declaring anything and selling tens of thousands. I sell on 3 or 4 sites as well as fairs so my declared numbers are actually higher than what hmrc can see.
As long as what you sell on your private account is clearly not business sales. Worst case £200 on your tax. Maybe print off a list of all your private sales incase it is ever an issue but hopefully they'll be too busy chasing all of those "private" sellers.

Thank you, that's really helpful. Good idea to print off a list too!

Strictly speaking, you should report any income that you receive. Even income that is from selling off personal items on Ebay.
But if you have sold items on your personal account, that are actually from the business, then you very definitely need to report them.
99 times out of 100 it won't be an issue if you don't, but there is always the possibility that they will look deeper. At which time, it then could be.

I do report every item I sell from the business, I'd find it more stressful trying to hide sales if I didn't anyway!!
I've printed the list and highlighted the business sales so if I get audited I can show I've been honest.

Everyone does as they see fit for their own circumstances........
But has anyone asked ebay the security question..... 128-bit encryption, 256-bit encryption, sat around on an old spreadsheet........??
Presumption is the first foot to fall............enjoy.

Thank you, the "digital sales" bit put me off. I thought they meant things like POD
