Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

Is it just me, since ebay have made changes to the cancellation process the number of buyer cancellations is increasing

Always the same reasons "ordered  by mistake" etc

This last few weeks I'm getting 2 or 3 a week!  Very frustrating

Yes, huge increase in cancellations. Doesn't help that whenever a customer buys anything, they are inundated with 'Why didn't you buy it from this guy instead', messages.

Cost of living crisis + buyer remorse + easy option to cancel = cancellations.

Not cancellations but none paying bidders i've had 3 in a month usually don't get any in years!

So cancelling by default

Had 2 in the last 2 weeks, including one today from a 0 feedback buyer who only just joined. Before that I had 1 cancellation in 5 years. Also had a torrent of return requests without initial contact and with very suspicious/ambiguous reasons over the last couple of months, far more than usual - a couple of which have been clear scams with the wrong item being returned. Absolute nighmare to sell on here these days.

Re: Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

I've been a eBay seller for around 2 months now and the amount of issues and things i'm reading on all these boards along with the high fees and things really are making me question if I should stop before I get in too deep. Luckily I have a main income

You might also want to consider that "misery loves company" so, whilst there are exceptions to every rule, many of the people who post regularly on these boards are self-selecting ie they are struggling, that is why they are here. Busy sellers are busy elsewhere... selling...

Online retail is still a growth market. Ebay has weathered a thousand storms. No one can predict when it will hit an iceberg, but I can say that in 14 years selling on ebay the majority on these boards have always thought it was imminent and the majority has always been wrong. Changes/constant updates/issues (and glitches) are all part and parcel of ebay attempting to navigate/survive.

'Changes/constant updates/issues (and glitches) are all part and parcel of ebay attempting to navigate/survive.'

Not sure I agree with this one. Gliches are a product of continuous code on top of code rather than a complete site overhaul which I think even E-bay would admit is needed.

I would also say that E-bay are just taking a page from the US company playback. Once your market growth hits saturation, hike up the price, go to a subscription model, etc. It's more a product of maximising profits.

They are surviving, but that's it really. Online retail is absolutely a growth market but E-bays financial figures show a real stagnation in growth. E-bay just isn't the household name it used to be which is a real shame as it could be. I don't think the end is nigh, I just think it is a slow deterioration.

Another cancellation this morning. Seems like a daily occurence. I have a voucher promotion running and they forgot to use it. Strange, I remember previous vouchers being automatically applied at purchase. This is not the case anymore?

Re: Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

I bought something recently and was immediately shown the same item from another seller for £2 less after I had clicked to buy it.

No wonder buyers are cancelling and buying the cheaper one!  ( I didn't cancel)

Buyers do have the legal right to cancel if you are a business seller, though...

But I guess ebay cant do a complete site overhaul without major overhaul so it struggles on (a bit like the London underground? One of the oldest in the world... but it cranks on working for millions)

I would also say that E-bay are just taking a page from the US company playback. Once your market growth hits saturation, hike up the price, go to a subscription model, etc. It's more a product of maximising profits. Maybe. But sales still happen. You have to be the seller selling or move on. Everyone is in charge of their own business model.

My point is, I;ve seen 14 years of iceberg spotting on these boards. I have majorly discounted this year to weather VINTED (I think) cost of living (I think). Fingers crossed for next year. And I'm dealing with ZERO fees for private (er...business?) sellers in my category!

Another cancellation this morning. Seems like a daily occurence. I have a voucher promotion running and they forgot to use it. Strange, I remember previous vouchers being automatically applied at purchase. This is not the case anymore? Cancellations may mean fewer returns which were rising massively. I suspect ebay cancellation changes may be to do with this.

No code not auto applied. When I get watchers I send an extra 5% offer and add in the message: UK buyers don't forget to use SEPTSAVE20 at checkout for an additional 20% off this offer price. That's right! An extra 20% off on top of this offer price. Happy Autumn xxx

Truthfully, it is a TOUGH YEAR. But not everything is ebay's fault. If you had to ask me why I might leave ebay  it is because of a change in buying habits. Buyers expect next day delivery, free returns (or cancellations). Ebay cant ignore what buyers want if it is to attract them.  I think Vinted (no returns there, virtually no buyer protection) is sending increasingly picky buyers (who want returns) to ebay. Poor me.  Who'd be an online seller? Oh yeah, someone who like the flexibility of working for themselves (or with mates), going long walks (gotta love a dog) and never saying 'yes boss' to an idiot.

Don't take everything you read on here as the norm that everyone with an eBay account goes through all these issues on a daily basis.

No one,  or very rarely,  does anyone come here with an opening post saying how wonderful everything is with good sales,  etc. etc.

You have some nice varied items,  a new account , give it time,  to see if this can work for you.

I always love your posts. Can't argue with any of it! I've been doing a lot of hiking this year as well. 🙂

Re: Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

Oh yeah definitely. I'm on forums for football and used to be on twitter so I know that online posts and reviews tend to be weighted towards negatives. I've actually learnt quite a bit about what to look out for by reading the negative comments in fairness. Plus my sales have slowly crept up last couple days 😊

Yes we are getting loads throughout the week now and its becoming very tiring along with all the other down sides to ebay, this platform has become a sinking ship. Can't see it being around in a few yeara

Re: Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

There seems to be a trend of it and i cant help but feel that if you look at how the cancellors word things its deliberate time wasting or they are trying to get information. As soon as they know they are collecting from a local supermarket car park and not my home they suddenly come up with excuses to cancel. Do have one that yet again says they cant collect, and would i post. I offered to deliver, they have gone silent because i dont think they are local.

Re: Buyers cancelling orders seems to become more frequent

Me too, 2 in the last week, 4 in 3 weeks. Ebay making it too easy for timewasters. First thing I do is block them but really frustrating. Tempted to refuse their request to cancel but would it lead to repercussions ?
