Sent cards to David Steele on 15/6 and received all back signed on the 12/11. He also sent a nice letter in answer to my questions.
David Steele played cricket for Northants, Derbys and England during the 1960/70/80's. He played 8 tests and 1 ODI for England in 1975-76. He was brought into the England side by Tony Greig aged 34, to play in the Ashes series v Australia. He was called "the bank clerk that went to war". When he got to the crease for his first innings he was greeted by the great Dennis Lillee with the line " Bloody hell, what have we here then, Groucho Marx", due to his grey hair and glasses. He went on to score 5 half centuries in his six innings that summer. He played two more tests against the W.Indies, in which he scored his one test century, 106. He failed to make the winter tour to the W.Indies and his test career was over. He finished his career at Derbyshire in 1981.
