Tonight's election - 3 declared and shocked already!

Not wanting to start a debate about the election, but I think this will be an interesting night.

Blyth Valley has been won by the Conserviatives.

I was too young to vote in 1974, but it has been an interesting seat for many years - though not for the Conservatives - eveyone knew the then Labour MP Eddie Milne - by which time he was an independent - he won the first election that year but lost the secod - by less than 100 votes - 40,000 votes for labour in total and under 7000 for the Conservatives.

And the Conservatives stayed about that figure until 2017 - and today a win!  Mainly a  mining town which has been a very depressed and ignored place for many many years -  and Ronnie Campbell was the Labour MP there from 1987 until this year - a miner and a vocal remainer.- and now Blyth has a Tory MP.

An interesting snippet today for most - seats of course change sides - but knowing the place - and always voting Tory when I lived there - I am gobsmacked.

An interesting night!

Saddened, but relieved.

Sad because at heart I think a united Europe is a great idea, but not in the undemocratic form that exists at the moment.  So I reluctantly voted to leave.

Relieved because the Remainers have had their second referendum and cannot now legitimately block the process any longer.  But even more so because so many voters expressed their anger at Parliaments efforts to reverse the referendum result despite promising to uphold it.   I hope that Labour and the Lib Dems learn the lesson.  That the majority of voters value democracy above tribal loyalty and if they want to stand any chance of being elected they should listen to the people, not the Westminster bubble.

Perhaps it has taught the electorate something as well.  That by voting for what they want, not what the tribal leaders decide that they should have, they can get it.

If the electorate has indeed learned, they must now demand that promises are kept.  And Labour has to learn that a party that wants to win has to unite behind its leader, who in turn must be able to lead.

It's high time it's realised that socialism, for all it's supposed "good intentions" just doesn't work. Story, end of.
