To need anything, is to be beholden to something. We all have a puppeteer pulling our strings, to a greater or lesser degree, to cut those strings completely; is to live no longer.

It's been known for some time, ISPs have fought against it for years as they would have to hold all their user's records for a year. It also allows the authorities to hack into computers without needing a warrant.

The problem is that when it was first proposed there were far too many people having the view that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear, ignoring the fact that laws are always used to their fullest extent even where some uses were never originally envisaged or intended.

Such a view is an open door to those who wish to control your thoughts and thereby your life, it can already be seen how freedom of speech is being steadily eroded.

Good laws are those that benefit the people, bad laws are those that benefit the state.........too often, people think they are one and the same; when in fact ( on many occasions ) the state need the laws to control and restrict the people, NOT to ensure their well-being and freedoms.

Yes, I very much agree with you.

Have read over the last few years of "high profile" prosecutions of businesses with huge turnovers but not registered with HMRC,  done without this.

Have also read that HMRC is so over-stretched that it can't investigate many others it would like to prosecute.

I cannot believe that it really wants to to uncover thousands(?)  of low-level tax evaders on ebay or gumtree and would probably be horrified to receive thousands of registrations as businesses by sellers.  Processing all the returns would in most cases yield little or no extra tax while over-stretching them even more.

The tax issue is just the pretext to legalise a widening of the net and allow ever more snooping.
