Hi there
I have these 2 old dinner plates which are foxing me. They look pretty old but I can't find anything similar on-line. They are discoloured to cream. They have a light blue print of poppies, paisley-like swirls and tassels. I don't think they're transfers but I'm not sure. There are numbers on the reverse "4 3513 7" and a word or numbers stamped which isillegible. They are gilt edged. They are very pretty.

Looking at the patterns on the two plate it does look like transfers to me, not hand painted.
They look pretty and old though.

Hi there. Thank you for responding. The only reason I wasn't sure about transfers is because the pattern is knobbly/bumpy/slightly raised in places. I have another piece of old transferware (not connected) which is completely smooth, but maybe that's just down to technique. Siobhan.

When you look at the plates side by side and you compare the flowers and the decorations around the edge they are just too similar. You must be a heck of a painter to copy something that precise. It is possible though.
Transfers can be put on any surface as far as I know.
I've looked on Google, typed in blue and white French plates as I was wondering if they could be French looking at the decorations.
But I know little about pottery and porcelain so I'm just guessing.

Besides the mark is there an imprint in the glaze?
