Another example of how one rule can't fit all - in the two cases that went to court I can't see how anyone could determine that they shouldn't receive housing benefit to cover the rooms designated as 'spare' bedrooms.

Likewise there are no doubt other cases where individuals do receive benefit to pay for additional rooms that aren't used.

In the middle are millions of people covering that range.

In my opinion the big mistake the government made in restricting housing benefit was to impose the restrictions retrospectively.

The government has been defeated in the Lords over plans to cut £30 a week from the benefits of sick and disabled people who have been found unfit to work.

The house of Lords will be losing their power to overturn anything very soon if DC gets his way:

I still dont know why they call it a tax, if it was, everyone would pay it.

It is simply that Housing Benefit will only pay for what they think you need, not what you have.

And it only applies to council tenants, private tenancies have been that way for ages.

I live alone and have 2 bedrooms, but it doesnt affect me as I am over 60

I also live in a block designated for over 60s.

Its not a tax as such, but Bedroom tax rolls off the tongue a bit easier than Spare room subsidy, bit like poll tax instead of Community charge

At the end of that article he says :

"In summary, the most important issue and for me the quickest way to get rid of the bedroom tax is if all 449,151 households who are currently affected write 1 letter and then insist in 1 email their council refers their individual case to tribunal to cost the government £2,800 or so.

Do unto IDS as he is doing unto you!"

Its a form of direct action which those affected can do from their own home, theres a facebook page which offers help and support to those affected

Lets all have socialism / communism that's what I say, the following paragraph is taken from a long article on social housing in communist countries.  Seems to me, the worse you treat your people; the more they think the Sun shines out of your rectum......a bit like the Russians do about Putin and DID about Stalin ( until somebody informed them what "Mugs" he'd make of them ).  Treat them too well, or don't give them ALL they want and they show utter contempt.........nobody should have any more than the next person......NO EXCUSES......that's what I say.  Lets ALL be miserable happy together..Smiley LOL

Industrialization brought more people from rural areas to the cities. As few new housing units were built immediately after the war, an already severe housing shortages became worse. Eventually, chronic housing shortages and overcrowding required an extensive program of new construction. As a result, most communist countries adopted the solution used in the USSR which included strict limits on the living space to which each person was entitled. Generally, each person was entitled to about 9-10 square meters (100 square feet). Often, more than one person had to share the same room. Two or more generations of the same family would often share an apartment originally built for only one nuclear family. There was no space allocated to separate living and dining areas.

This individual gets the same thrill and adrenaline rush from imposing Draconian rules on the populace, that some other people get from bungee jumping.
