Maybe the preponderance of food-related topics here, is caused by a woman's innate desire to cook.

Nothing wrong with that.  It's natural. Men go out and find the food. Then the women cook it.

Could the predominance of food related topics not be down to the over exuberance of the moderators when other topics are discussed ?

Yes, you may be right.   The mods naturally want a peaceful night's moderating. 

And they figure this can be achieved, by encouraging non-controversial topics. Such as cooking.

Cooking has such a seductive appeal to women, that female posters will go on and on about it.  For hours and days on end.

Thus giving the mods the opportunity to relax.

i would say that 80% of the time.. the ladies do the shopping!

I do 95% of our shopping, and I've just come back from four nights away and had to re-wash half the cutlery as it had grease and bits on it all, make the bed, correct several glaring household errors and empty the letterbox.

Just for the record, yes I am male and it's the wife who can't do anything...
