Microsoft are issuing security patches for older out of support OS

Heads up for those of us with older OS

Picked up the article from the Register:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/13/windows_patch_tuesday_for_june/

For newer systems and (servers) from and including windows 7 you should be able to get these patches via windows update. But for older systems or if you are having the common windows update problems ( of searching all night and not getting the updates) you have to install using the standalone installer.

For those who are unfamiliar with this process you simply set windows update to never search or download then restart the computer. You can then double click on the standalone installer and it will do its thing. Setting a system restore point and making sure you have critical stuff backed up is always a sensible precaution. Link to MS page below, its not flagged my antivirus but if in doubt navigate from the ms site.

Thanks for the useful gen about actually achieving the update, AD.

They seem to be a little more willing to provide patches for really serious stuff on older OSes than they used to be. I noticed a recent update was made available going back to Windows XP.

I've not updated Windows 7 for ages - since they were due to adopt the "roll up" approach, dishing out a month's patches en masse rather than individually. I'd honestly rather know just what each update includes - in order to exclude any "telemetry" and similar villainy crawling aboard.

As a result, my W7 machines are most definitely not to be trusted...
