Can sales improve by adding variations to existing listings instead of just adding new listings?

It's been said that creating new listings helps to improve eBay sales. I was wondering whether this would include adding variations to existing listings or does it have to be whole new listings? Thanks.

Once a listing has been created annoyingly you cant add variations so you have to start again.  

Variations also depends on what your listing as the filters that many use on the app/mobile use size, colours etc so by putting variations in excludes you being seen.
