We’re updating some of our categories and item specifics to make your listings easier to find.

Starting 12 October, you’ll see updates to the following categories.

Collectibles & Art

Jewelry

Musical Instruments

Parts & Accessories

Sporting Goods

As these updates go into effect, you may see temporary impacts to your listing experience or to the visibility of listings in the affected categories.

This is a result of listings transitioning to the updated item specifics and category structures. Your affected listings should return to normal within 48 hours, though you may see irregularities on some listings for up to a week. We recommend checking your item specifics and categories in affected listings after these updates are complete.

These updates also include new item specifics in the above categories, which will be required 22 February 2022. Starting today, these item specifics will be available as you list, with the “Required Soon” tag. Learn more →

Keep an eye on this page over the coming days—we’ll be sharing up-to-date information on affected categories and listings, and answering any questions you have.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 ---Update as of 14 October---

We’re continuing to work through this change and want to thank you for your patience. We also wanted to provide answers to some top concerns and questions:

Why was I charged fees when my listings were moved to a different categories/subcategories?

We determined that a technical issue impacted a small number of listings, which resulted in incorrect charges (including insertion fees) for some sellers. The issue has been fixed and we will be crediting impacted sellers as quickly as possible. No calls to Customer Service are necessary as credits will be issued automatically.

Should I edit my listings if they’re in the wrong category, have been moved to another category, or have wrong or missing item specifics?

No. Recent category changes require updates to many thousands of servers and data changes to nearly every aspect of our platform. This level of adjustment takes time, which is why we asked for your patience while the process runs. We expect most data updates to be completed within 48 hours, but they can take up to a week (i.e., through to 19 October). After that, if you have an item specific in mind that you think would work well for your listing, please consider adding it as a custom item specific.

Why isn’t my item coming up in search?

The category change update is still in process. We anticipate search issues will resolve when we complete most data updates during the next 24-48 hours.

There are more item specifics now than ever before. Do I need to fill in all of them?

No. Item specifics that you have already filled in will be maintained as the category moves are completed during the next week. In addition, new soon-to-be-required item specifics are being added and will become required by 22 February 2022. As always, the more item specifics you fill out, the better visibility your listing has to buyers.

For Parts & Accessories, when will fitment/compatibility charts start working again?

There was an issue with parts compatibility not working properly as the category changes rolled out, which has been resolved. You should now be able to see the options to add fitment compatibility when editing your listings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 ---Update as of 21 October---

We apologise for this delayed update. Thank you for your patience while our teams worked to finalise category changes.

All listings have been moved to their final destination categories. You may now proceed with checking your categories, revising items, and updating item specifics where needed.

Some item specifics have been renamed, and the value you originally provided has been copied over to the new item specific, so you don’t need to re-add these item specifics. We encourage you to update your listings with item specifics that are showing as “Required Soon.” These will become required on 22 February 2022.

All other item specifics are either Recommended or Optional. Learn more about item specifics.

Some categories were retired and replaced by product-based categories. You and your buyers can still find the items you’re looking for. Simply browse to the product category of your choice and use the filters to refine your search.

More information about key category changes:

  • Dolls & Bears. The categories based on Brand/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type of doll have been retired. Former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the new Dolls & Doll Playsets category. You can access the filters by browsing to the product category of your choice and using Brand/Vintage/Material/Theme/Character/Franchise/Product Line/Type filters to refine your search.
  • Pottery & Glass. The categories based on Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique have also been replaced by filters. You and buyers can now filter by the Brand/Origin/Production Style/Production Technique/Time Period Manufactured.

  • Postcards. The categories based on Location/Theme/Subject have been retired and replaced with two main categories for Topographical and Non-Topographical postcards. The former categories have been replaced by left-hand navigation filters in the two new main categories. For example in Topographical Postcards, you can filter by Country and Region.

  • Jewellery & Watches. The categories based on Main Stone and Metal Type have been retired and replaced by product-based categories under Fine Jewellery. Use the filters for Main Stone and Metal to refine your search.

---Final Update, October 29---

The category changes announced in our Autumn Seller Update have been completed.

Now that all category changes are complete, while you might still see some adjustments to searches, it is okay to update or edit your listings without concerns of losing data or having it moved again.

We appreciate your detailed feedback on this roll-out. We'll continue to adjust the process based on the input we’ve received here, and we'll take all these suggestions into consideration for future updates.

As this project is now complete, this post is being locked from further comments.

Resources and observations

We’ve heard from you that updating your Item Specifics in time for the February 2022 requirement date may be a challenge.

A useful tool that can help is located in the Seller Hub under Active Listings section. There is a drop-down box labelled ‘Download’ which will generate an Excel document for ‘Missing Required or Recommended Item Specifics’. You can read more about this tool here

Should you come across any inaccuracies within the new Item Specifics we ask that you report those directly to sdsupport@ebay.com so our team can investigate. We also ask that you continue to share suggestions on changes you'd like to see going forward here, selecting the Categories and Item Specifics option.

Just received this from ebay it expired before it was sent !!!!!!!!!

casandra230_0-1635681866134.jpeg

received the above this morning it arrived after it had expired. \already moving my listing to another platform

I usually list a number of auction items weekly in the Pottery/Porcelain/Glass - Date Lined Ceramics category (that was), but due to the drop-off in bids and reduced visibility of my items, (I've tried a couple of weeks to monitor), I'm now only listing as Buy-it-now, until things improve.

I put as much info in my titles as possible, i.e. "Antique", maker, item etc. so those searching for specific items, say for an "antique Spode plate", should find them in a search, but of course I'll no longer get category browsers, who probably account for a lot of sales.

Unfortunately, as eBay only provide a platform from which we can sell, they have no obligation to support us and until there's a viable alternative, we're kind-of stuck with them, and I think they know that.☹️

As observed by the post above, e bay do not care about their sellers because we are indeed "kind of stuck with them".

Others have observed that e bay do not read these comments anyway.

The question is whether other people read and are aware of them.  E bay cares about its bottom line a good deal more than it cares about sellers.  But the market is likely aware that e bay's changes have affected sales and hence income.  I doubt their share value will increase as a result of these changes.  Perhaps those with shops who have been badly affected could post elsewhere than on this thread - ie not on ebay.  I recall some time ago that the Daily Mail was running a section in their Money Mail pages which suggested ways in which people could raise additional income, and e bay was suggested.  The comments back were not too positive, with most saying that e bay was difficult to do, the listings were a pain, and they had ended up taking their surplus stuff to the local charity shop.  And that was before the joy which these changes have wrought.

As a seller, other than to rage against the machine over the last week or so I was unaware as to the true scale of the gutting of the  Antiques & Collectables categories, today is the first time in a very long while that I have tied to search.

I am a collector of this & that, & love spending a few hours trying to hunt down a treasure or two, in the past this would have been in the UK, but due  to Borris´s Barmy Brexit & gruesome VAT/customs fees, I no longer search in the UK, so I search within the EU, I have a few favorite sellers, who have fabulous contacts & a huge pool of delights to delve into.

I have just had the shock of my life. Browsing in Antiques, one of the best German based sellers has over 2,000 items, in the past oyu could refine your search to pin point exactly what you were after, now there are 3 categories, metal & bronze, art, porcelain & ceramics, & there is   categorically NO way to refine a search, I first noticed this ohhh, around 2-3 weeks back, & simply thought there was a glitch.

Knowing now as I do, that this is a deliberate move on the part of eBay, & seeing the lunacy in black & white today has been a salutary lesson... On Gods great earth, what would ever have caused eBay to have quite literally travelled back in time, & to have now made it near impossible to find anything...  I thought we sellers of vintage jewellery had it bad, but HMofG, sellers of rare collectibles niche must feel like jumping off the nearest bridge.

The sheer lunacy of this move must be making a gaping hole in eBays sales & profit margin, & can just pray that eBay take note.  I mean, what kind of numskulls dreamed this up?

Trying to sell a few bits on Delcampe -- Seb Delcampes website is all ebay should be or very nearly was -- you can list very precisely with none of this topographical and non topographical nonsense.

Its the same in usa and germany. Hope many collectors in germany go to hood....and built a new community.

Wish all the best, cut off and search for other possibilitys. Kisses from germany

Fensterlader1 - I am sorry to hear you are suffering the same as we are.  It is good to hear from you.  Best wishes.

I can only agree with all of the comments again. I am still sad that I no longer have a place for my hobby ... collecting antique dolls and accessories ... I have an emotionally demanding job, because browsing, buying and selling was a wonderful, fulfilling occupation. And yet it was only a hobby, I regret all other users of the affected sectors who made a living from it or who made some living from it.

With the discontinuation of the transfer payment option, older collectors have already been excluded. I took part in the increase in fees ... because ... whose bread I eat, whose song I sing ...

But that's too much for me now. I do not like to submit so defenselessly to a corporation.

I've put on my hoodie (ie paint it) and will be there again and again over the next few months and otherwise use the flea market, auctions, etc. Even if something changes, I just realized how dependent I have made myself. I don't want that anymore for the future. Off to new shores ... if possible, no more money from me for ebay.

Hi,
I have just tried searching in Germany, & I am heartbroken, it is now impossible to refine a search, so I gave up. Countless sellers of antiques & collectables must want to explode with fury...

I look around my home & I have a few pieces I won at auction from German sellers, I would never have found any of these pieces under this new system, a few pieces I was thinking of reselling, but now I think I will keep them ")
I tried selling some rare vintage Dior, Guerlain & Chanel items on Delcamp a few years ago, & had the shock of my life when they were all removed, for LVMH will not allow the sale/purchase of any items under their umbrella into/outside of France. I tried to fight it, tried to prove that the items I owned had been produced long before LVMH absorbed said groups into their sponge like entity, but Delcamp refused to allow me to list, so I walked away from them. Yet I had had the same issue with Lóreal many, many years ago over listing vintage YSL, where they had had eBay listings removed, I wrote to them, & a day or to later their fabulous head of department actually phoned me at home, to apologise & tell me that I had full permission to sell vintage YSL, for the products were not then under the Lóreal umbrella ...

Now I've just found out that nearly all of my items now do not offer the Global Shipping Program, even though all are enrolled in the program and are showing as enrolled..

In fact, according to Ebay Customer Service Chat... Only 16 items out of 489 are showing as having Global Shipping.

When asked why I have been told that they have no idea why and that this is down to Pitney, not Ebay, even though this all mysteriously changed when the catergory items changed.

I have contacted Pitney who say that this is an Ebay problem instead!!!

I honestly am giving up all hope now 😞

Hardly any sales since this change happened either...

Thanks Ebay,

By removing  the pre 1840 Date lined Ceramics  catagory  you have completely ruined my buying experience.

Why do you have to meddle?

prelovedjewels,

I noticed the GSP issue almost straight away, due to a drop in sales.

There have been catagories excluded from GSP for a while,

but now lots more are excluded.

On top of this certain keywords will get you excluded as well,

and it's very hard to find a list of what is / isn't included for GSP.

I don't think my buyers don't search catagories, instead preferring keywords (vehicle parts).

I used to be diligent in using the correct catagory, but since Ebay has moved all my stuff into wholly incorrect catagories, I now don't care and list according to which catagories are included in GSP.

I really feel for you guys in the collectables field as it seems to have been completely ruined for you.

Hi,

Has no-one not been effected by this roll out of e Bays?

Searching has become a bun-fight, wading through masses of rubbish hoping for a hit ")

I just had a buyer telling me that he could not make a payment because ebay informed him that "the seller does not send items to the West Midlands".

You could not make it up!

To be honest I think a lot of buyers have given up looking on ebay -- many of them are searching for stuff elsewhere - sales seem to be down for all of us

Sent from Mail for Windows

Not all – you can always put your items to an auction house; I have found before that you can get rates no worse than eBay, and there is no packing to do, or do you have problems with postal services, or buyers deciding they have changed their mind etc. etc.

What a total disaster all this is for us.  I feel so fed up with it all today.  I have tried to alter the categories they have put my stuff in and it reverts back to the lunacy of serveware!  I have stock coming and I now wonder if I am wasting my money.

GSP seems ok for me at the moment, although it did "collapse" at the start of this debacle.

Where on earth do we go from here.  I just don't know.  I wish I did.

Imagine, eBay LOST 5% of its sellers within the last 1/4, yet they made a profit on the back of profits from Managed Payments & (roll of drums) Promoted Listings, which they KNOW does not work.... so guys & gals, more fees ahead for all of us, for as sure as eggs is eggs they are going to have to keep the illusion of a healthy & thriving eBay.

Do yourselves a favor & watch or listen to this video by one of the star seller / analysists on eBay, you can listen as you list LOL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4L2ulLs0sWY

Has anyone else had a problem with altering postage costs or even looking at what you have in as your default settings because I can not even go in to change my postage amounts or even look at the ones I generally use so basically unless I have an item that goes as a small parcel I am now unable to list.

Yes.   My Euro rate suddenly disappeared and scratching around I cannot find out where now to put it back again.  UK Remained unchanged and I Think worldwide remained -- must be a BREXIT moment

Sam -  thank you, very interesting.

Not Satisfied with messing up the specifics. I now notice that the buyers can't find stuff either, Type in Poole Pottery and get any old junk  comes up, the algorithm they use is not fit for purpose. TIME TO SACK SOMEBODY!

I couldn't agree more!  I have just received a notification " Your Payments are On Hold".  Interesting that one, seeing as I have only just sold something after 6 days!

You really couldn't make this up!

As time rolls on, as UK eBay remains mute,  & as we are able to look at this lunacy with a certain amount of detachment, it is shockingly clear that those who run the assorted European & UK eBays, could not have been consulted, for much of this category gutting & renaming blatantly ignores British terminology, this could explain the appalling silence from (say) UK eBay.

Have many of you taken the time to see how eBay made its profits in the last 1/4? Where profits were up thanks to Managed Payments & Promoted Listings, yet they lost 5% of their sellers & heaven only knows how many buyers.  Take a moment to look at this video from a guy who knows what he is talking about,

Just for interest my Financial Feed today gives (at close of business today)

To Sell 74.90; to Buy 74.91 = - 1.83%

Fluctuated for the last 10 days.

Meant to add - hope you are are all well and managing to cope best you can.

I have looked at listing in model railways for example - change from the old system means that there is no longer a logical way to find the right category. I tried a search for O gauge locomotives, and found it came up with pages of American engines. Trying using the word British it gave only two examples. You used to be able to go straight to O gauge - locomotives, and you had pages of the right British engines; all quite simple.  Now it seems the only way to search is go to model railways  and then click on the choices at the top of the page - that is if you spot these!  Any other way of seaching seems to bring up loads of the wrong items. One of the problems appears to be that the whole system now seems to have joined the the various countries into one lump, and it just does not work.

It is not worth the time listing knowing that buyers are unlikely to find your items.

oh it is the same for everything -- I went yesterday to look at 1914 WW1 war damage to Scarborough and was confronted with a lot of halloween items ! -- all logic has gone out of the window with searching for anything -- ebay has become a whole lot less interesting place to look for things.  I Was buying from ebay in 1999 before they went global and their strength was collectibles so it attracted buyers from around the world -- according to the professor all they want to do now is sell electricals at 500.00 or higher which is a pretty congested area - I mean once you have a laptop and a mobile phone you do not need one every month or mebbe every year -- and for me e-bay is not the first place I would go to buy a new laptop !

I went on a training scheme in 1997, and took a antique magazine with me to read as there was no iPads etc then.

and on the back it said, a auction house online, so I started to buy and sell using computers at a local community place, and also learn out to use them at the same time.
so easy to use then, and there was turbo lister, miss that. Your drafts did t disappear then as they do now.

you're exactly right fordedison. they'r after one off buyers who may come on here from time to time and do away with regular buyers of collectibles who spend more in one year than a one off cost of an iPad. when a postcard collector buys 10 postcards at £3.00 each weekly, that commission soon mounts up to more than a single iPad. really, it's the collectors that keeps ebay going and now they want to exchange  there golden eggs for wooden egg cups with nothing to put in them.

it's also struck me, they say add specifics and yet when you add them to postcards, why is it the specifics they ask you to add ain't in the search i.e. size, printed or RP? come on ebay, you expect us to waste our time to add things which isn't going to end up in the search.

today at 10.30 I received a phone call from the person that is in charge of collectables my email that I sent to Mr Lambell had been passed onto them I went through the concerns we were facing with not being able to list things in appropriate sections, having things all lumped together buyers/sellers not being able to find things and  so on I also suggested that ebay actually come onto the notice boards and let all their unhappy buyers and sellers know what they are doing - I was told that they realise the rollout was not done effectively as it should have been and that a lot of problems have been caused  the person actually joined the team after the rollot had commenced - they are working to rectify the problems we have faced and they are aware of this notice boards and have been reading them  they are in fact contacting people to chat with them to improve the situation. I tried to put across as a small seller what it has done to me and the effect it has had on sellers and buyers of all sizes my sales are down by 43%. I hope my chat goes someway to helping all the buyers and sellars  I noticed that their have been some changes on the listing of china and you can now actually put a brand in.  The final question I asked was are ebay trying to get rid of the small sellers and just go after the bigger sellers I was told  this is catagorically not the case.  The person is going to ring me back in a few weeks to see how things are.  I hope my imput has helped

Thanks for sharing that.  It is nice to know that the problem has been at least observed although I only hope that goes up to the person who dreamed up this disastrous idea.  Nice to believe  that the comment about going for the big numbers is true, I think it should be, no reason to think they would want to throw away a thoroughly thriving business.  The best outcome would be for someone at ebay.com (because that is obviously the origin) to say sorry this has brought about unwanted consequences and we are reverting to the old system.....or give us back something where items can be categorized correctly

Oh my god, does this nonsense ever end.  Just had a very good offer via messages, international order, try to reply and it tells me in red "This message is over 90 days old"!!  Really!!

It's like living in some sort of parallel universe!.

megansstore,

I have had this, go directly to messages and answer that way, the reply links are not workning properly...

Just looked at model railways – O gauge locomotive kits
Then steam – era 3 – material brass

Result 1 and 9 matching fewer results
Material brass 1 , plastic 1 and 10 wood!

Throw in Era 4 and you get a few more strange results ; remove the word kits, and the first item that comes up is a kit built brass loco!

Site needs work!!

Thank you Shipshape - all done.  Many thanks.
