Ebay is ignoring my request for assistance in having a counterfeit handbag refunded.
My wife has an original of the bag this was to have been a replacement - when it arrived it was clearly a fake.
They actually closed my request for assistance without explaining and are also ignoring all of my queries as to how they allow fake times to be sold without recourse to the buyer.
I see others have had this issue - can anyone shed some light?
What do you mean by 'request for assistance'...? You don't ask Ebay for assistance if that's what you're doing. The entire system is automated, so you must use the on-site tools that Ebay supplies. As long as you open a case or return request for the correct reason, and within 30 days of the delivery estimate on the order, it will not close unless you fail to follow Ebay's clear instructions.
Ebay does not allow fakes to be sold on their sites. But they can't possibly check the many millions of items which are listed daily, obviously. That's why they provide the 30-day Money Back Guarantee (on every listing, in various other places across the site, and on your order confirmation), the More Actions dropdown (beside each transaction on your Purchase History page), the Resolution Centre (foot of any page), and the Help pages with their integral search (links at top and foot of any page). All of these tools exist to ensure that a buyer cannot lose their money. All you have to do is use them as instructed. It seems you failed to do that.
However, if you're within 180 days of purchase date, all is not lost, as you can open a case in PayPal or with your card provider.
Finally, you say others have had this issue, so I assume you only read the seller's feeback once you realised there was a problem with the item. The whole point of Ebay having a feedback system is so that you can make an informed buying decision before parting with your hard-earned. No point at all in reading it afterwards.
You made a purchase from a seller and paid him for that purchase. You are in Australia, what country is your seller in.
By comparing your purchase with a item in your possession you decided your seller, not eBay, had sold you a fake product.
You then contact eBay with your accusation without any written proof from the manufacturer, just your assumption.
You then blame eBay for not taking action..
But eBay haven't seen the item, they have not been given written confirmation..All they have is a buyer saying it's fake.
And have you considered your seller may not have known the item might have been fake.
The correct method would have been to open a claim using the facility provided by eBay.
That facility is the eBay 30 Days Money Back Guarantee.
Your seller would have supplied you with a prepaid label to return the item and your refund would have been made in around 3 days of your seller recieving the returned item.
How did you ask for ebay to help? Did you pen a Return Case? If so and the seller does not accept returns then the case closes.
You should have opened a Not As Described Case!!!!
Your last chance is now a Paypal Case, there you must escalate by day 20 and you will have to pay the return postage.
Getting it right with ebay and the seller would have had to provide a Reply Paid Tracked Label.

The point is that it is a counterfeit item and that should guarantee my funds returned. However, that is not the case - they simply closed the case. Now, are you suggesting I try a not as described? How is that more powerful than using Ebay's own Counterfeit guarantee that if a product sold is counterfeit they will ensure the funds AND postage is refunded

As said by @john1297576 You opened a straightforward Change of Mind Return Case. You should have Opened an Item Not As Described Case. Is no good throwing Fake accusations at Ebay. EBay don't actually see the Items Sold on their Site. Buyers Shout Fake all the time without any Authentication.
Just noticed that you are Based and Registered in Australia. Log out of EBay UK and back into your own Site. Ask on their Community Boards.
