How was it possible to have my account hacked?

I got an email from ebay in the middle of the night saying I'd changed my password - which I hadn't. 

Someone had got into my account and changed the password.

I've been able to change it back by going to the ebay site I've got stored - not by clicking on a link in the email, and I can't see any damage done.

Has this happened to others?

Why was it so easy for someone to change the password without authorisation via email/phone?

What should I check for?

Why would someone hack into my account, change the password and then not do anything?

Did the email appear in your Ebay messages or only your email ?.

If it didn't appear in both you might find it was a scam email trying to get you to log in so you would reveal your password.

If your password was changed how did you manage to change it back ?.

It was in both. I went to my saved off website link and tried to sign in and found my password was now wrong. So I clicked on the link to change it and got an email to allow me to do it.

It might have been a glitch then,there seems to be more than usual floating around at the mo.
