Hi Creeky,

Yes I can buy organic food in my supermarket (just can't afford it). Yes I can grow my own (that is for those who have a garden or can get an allotment of course).

The problem is that there comes a point that none of our food will be organic anymore because of cross pollination and contamination of the soil.  And that is happening everywhere now. So it's not all so plain and simple.

And if you think you have freedom of choice........for now you might have...in  the UK....but everything that happens in America eventually happens here.....And then the government will decide what you can and can not eat, and with force if they have to.......

Don't think it can't happen, because it already does.

All this talk about shortages is a myth created so organisations like Monsanto can keep making money.

Isn't all our food  "organic"?  Because  it's made of "organisms" that we've killed.  So that we can eat them.

The organisms may be cows, pigs, sheep, fish, lettuces, tomatoes or strawberries.  It doesn't matter what species they are.  We eat them.  To satisfy our hunger. As we have always done.  And as long as our hunger gets satisfied - and we have a full belly - what else matters?
All this modern talk about  so-called "organic food"  is just a recent fad.. A product of industrial civilisation.  And mechanised farming, which gives us more than enough to eat.  So we can relax in an abundance of food.
But if we were hungry, would we be bothered where our food came from?

No - in simple terms organic food is exactly as you describe, organisms that weve killed, nothing added - non-organic foods in addition to the organic part also contains inorganic compounds.

I suppose it is fair to call the uptake of organic food as a recent fad although it should be recognised that until the industrialisation of the West and the large increase in the population most foods were organic.

If we were hungry then the source of our food would indeed probably be the least of our worries but whilst we're not then the choice is and will continue to be available.  Given an affordable choice I will select organically grown foods, where the choice is not affordable or in my opinion not good value I will choose industrially produced items rather than go hungry.

Yes you are right, we would have no choice.

So it would be in the interest of the powers to be to keep the majority of the population on this planet poor wouldn't it...........

Everything the powers want rely on the mass being  poor, apparently chaos follows if the other way round and the poor want the powers to do something...might have something to do with there is actually only so much asset per head on planet earth (when value is material of course).

However people used to be 'elected' to speak for the poor to the powers so that the powers didn't get greedy ,especially by cutting corners at the expense of poor lives for extra 00000000000000000 on pretend wealth game (like the powers tend to do as they are greedy control freaks by nature) annnnd so democracy was born...........then hitlers mother in law 'The IRON Baby' von von der einstenfrankurt Thatcher gave the powers the right to do anything they please if it sticks a few quid in the elected's pockets and gets you your rightful Baronessyshipyness USA style and UK's inevitable rise to third world status was afoot, especially when her son of doom and the witch of hell moved into the great british rented lodgings of devil worship and robbed the lot 🙂

Still poisonous food is poisonous isn't it

Well now that you mention Hitler, he was nearly a vegetarian.  Only rarely ate meat, because he thought it disrupted his intestinal flora.

That was not, in itself, an unsound idea.  Humans are probably more evolved towards a vegetarian diet.  However, he came under the influence of  Dr Morell, his personal physician, who constantly gave him medicinal  tablets to suck.

The tablets were mildly poisonous, and certainly had deleterious effects on the Fuehrer's brain.  Like attacking Russia before the Wehrmacht had the Tiger tank, going for Kiev instead of Moscow in 1941, and above all - getting bogged down at Stalingrad in 1942.

All this is well known to military historians.  The Fuehrer could have won the war, if he hadn't been on medication.  It all depends on what you eat.

Have I got away, again?

It's probable that we have evolved to the species we are because we moved away from a vegetarian diet.  Animal flesh provides denser, higher quality nutrition, so the brain gained complexity that it may well not have done if we had stayed on a plant-based diet, especially given that many plants are seasonal, so some nutrients were only available for part of the yr, whereas meat can provide a continuous supply.

That's a very valuable point you make, **caution**, about the "seasonal" aspect.  I hadn't thought about that before.

But now that you've drawn attention to it, I can see what you mean.

Suppose humans relied on eating plants and vegetables. Then we'd be at our best, and efficiently nourished, during the seasons when vegetables are most available. Which means during the Spring, Summer, and Autumn.

During these seasons our brains would be well-fed.  And we could do our marvellous brain-led human activities, such as making stone-tools, inventing painting, writing, and culture generally.  But what would happen in Winter,  when the supply of vegetational food diminished almost to zero?   Then we'd be screwed.  Reduced to the plight of modern vegetarian garden-birds, who pathetically scrounge for hand-out seeds and breadcrumbs.

The fact that we haven't been brought so low, must be because we adopted an at least partial meat-diet.

As you say, meat is in continuous supply. That's its distinguishing factor.   It's not dependent on the seasons.  Even in Winter, there are many animals running about, which we can catch, and eat their flesh. To nourish our bodies, and reinforce our brains.

Meat will provide protein and most B vitamins, but not many other vitamins. A meat only diet would make the body too acidic, which is not so healthy. Vegetables and fruit make the body more alkaline, besides providing many other vitamins for our well being.  We need the balance to stay healthy. Smiley Happy

The Innuit seem to survive quite happily without fruit or vegetables - living almost exclusively on a diet of meat and fish.

This article about a study of two men who lived exclusively on meat for a year is interesting.

http://inhumanexperiment.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/two-brave-men-who-ate-nothing-but-meat.html

"While it would be interesting to replicate the study with a larger sample size and have more health markers measured than the ones used in the study, it is quite remarkable to see that a diet consisting of nothing but meat and animal fat is both feasible and, apparently, healthy."

People are thinking of us humans as we are today but our ancesters of long ago began a sort of transition to humanoids in a temperate region, probably wandering about as gatherers where food was available all year round, more or less available by just picking it off trees and bushes. Why "work" for it when you can just pick it up?

The World has gone through many changes of climate and the humanoids expanded their range away from the most productive regions so eventually had to hunt as well as gather.

By expanding their range to where Winter was upon them, they'd either have to learn to store food or become hunters to eat meat.

As humans as we know us, we ate a mixture of fruit of all sorts and meat so there was no imposition on the human race to be vegetarian at any time.

It's life Jim, but not as WE know it.

It would indeed be interesting to see the outcome of a large scale trial with the technology and knowledge we have gained since the 1930s.

I would also like to see how people from different parts of the world would respond to this diet.

Our digestive system adapts to the climate we live in for a long period of time.

Higher protein and fat intake would be important of course, including the need for higher calorie intake, in a colder climate. You would burn more calories to keep warm.
