The 'RANT THREAD' (thread).

So, what gets up your hooter ? What makes your hackles rise, so much so that even just thinking about it, practically induces an apoplectic fit ? Could be anything, a news item, something you encounter in everyday life, drivers/driving, work/housework, public transport, politics/politician, a TV programme, teenagers, a certain commodity or product, a celebrity, mode of dress, a sport, social media sites, mobile phone users, advertising, tattoos, the weather, tin rattlers, technology, bad service, modern architecture, overuse of the word 'amazing', certain music, user manuals, call centres, a neighbour, anything at all that gets you all steamed up.

They say just letting vent on paper has a cathartic effect. Dusty Springfield, when something annoyed her, would buy a bag full of cheap crockery from Woollies, and smash it all individually up against the wall. Now I'm not advocating going to that extreme - anyway Woollies shops are no more - but unbutton your waistcoat, loosen your stays, and just put it all down in typeface on here. You'll feel much better for it. Honest.

Please Note. Be mindful of the Board rules and regulations. No foul language please.

Go...

Mister EMB

I don't want to get involved in this argument but I do agree with Archie as I've said the exact same things to you myself in the past

Hey Lola, apologies for the delay in response...

Yes fine, if you agree with Archie; that’s your prerogative. Astro and Merehazel obviously strongly agree too. Let’s just leave it at that eh?

...and thanks for the kind words. Back on topic….re: pubegate. I did actually have a lengthy discussion with my better half as to whether it was actually a hair in my Sat Nav packaging. She seemed to think it was a rogue strain of fibre from packaging, whereas I follow the shadowy theory Tom Tom may actually employ people with pubic alopecia to “drop” their goods at the end of the production line - a Pube World Order perhaps? As far as flatulence goes, I did refer to “other” people's flatulence. Hear you on “glass houses” though. It’s probably too much info, but one of my more disgusting habits is the “DIY Dutch Oven”. Ahhh Bisto…

I do have a few more things to get off my chest....

1) Lapdogs. I hasten to use the term “dog”; imo they are not dogs…they are “crats”. As in half cat; half rat. They can't even bark properly:

@e.g Proper Dog: “Woah, woah, woah, woah, woah!” @ a comfortable bass.
The Crat: “Yip, yap, yip, yap, yip…eeiooooow!” *glass shatters*

2) Service in electrical stores. Why is it when you're “just browsing”, do about 10 different assistants approach you in as many minutes “Can I help you? Can I help? Are you looking for something in particular? Blah blah.” On the other hand, when you DO actually want to buy something, there's no-one to be found. Grrr. They're probably all too busy dropping stragglers into boxes at the Sat Nav section.

3) Expensive trendy gourmet restaurants. It seems the more you pay, the less food you get. Apparently, a leaf on top of 30 grains of cous cous translated in French justifies paying £50 for an amaaazing starter. However, considering these restaurants seem to thrive, I am prepared to accept that it may be moi who is in fact a culinary philistine.

So in short, my worst nightmare would be driving with a wasp in the car on a dual carriageway full of overtaking Tom Tom lorries en-route to a meeting at an amaaazing gourmet restaurant with a racist feral pensioner who has irritable bowel syndrome, a crat, and a PC World badge.

Have you noticed that immediately after they post their, 'I've had enough, I can't take this anymore' type statuses, they suddenly become completely incommunicado for the rest of the evening?

Next day you go on FB, all bleary-eyed cos you haven't slept a wink worrying that they've topped themselves, and there they are, happy as Larry, posting their usual banal drivel, the previous night's drama completely forgotten about.

Wouldn't lose a wink of sleep myself over such drama-queens!

I'm sure the thousands of people throughout the world who use dogs as guide dogs, buddies, etc, and of the thousands of police who utilise the services of canines as sniffers, would disagree with your views. There are many people, particularly an elderly person, whose only companion is a dog. Not sure how they would respond to you either. That's not to mention the number of humans who have found themselves in life threatening circumstances, and been given a second chance by a search and rescue dog.

Dogs can be great but then so are many people! Do you really think all those who have been assisted by dogs would proclaim them to be better than people?!

Also do people never assist in such ways!

Lots of the plastics used in packaging are still not recyclable so a huge amount is still going to landfill, the majority of it will still be with us in hundreds of years time.

Well actually we won't be around so "Yeah Plastic", some people wish they could be around a fraction as long. And of course don't worry about those who will be around because the plastic will be underground, in landfill, which is kinda the idea!

lambsy_uk
Conversationalist

So here is a rant.

I hate it that it would be deemed highly offensive if you mocked or derided the poor but it seems to be acceptable for people to say cruel things about the wealthy of Tory voters for example!

A comedian was interviewed on the radio, they were saying how his act at the Edinburgh Fringe was different because he was a Right-Wing comedian. They were saying that it is cruel to mock the needy but the wealthy are fair game; why?!!!

Surely a cruel jibe is a cruel jibe whoever it is intended for! Can the wealthy afford to be less sensitive or sometthing?!

Also during the Labour leadership campaign I heard many comments such as "we need an electable opposition to rid us of this Tory scourge." If a Tory talked like that about Labour supporters it wouldn't go un-noticed.

So I hate the idea that the wealthy, privileged or Tories are considered an acceptable target for derision and cruelty!!!

As with most problems it's always better to prevent the cause rather than solve the problem itself, if you don't handle the cause the problem will always be with us.  If supermarkets used recyclable materials for packaging the problem wouldn't exist.

Haven't you heard we are running out of landfill space? We have dumped so much assorted waste into landfill over the years that huge tracts of land are now unusable. We used to dump chemical and industrial waste into landfill sites until we wised up to fact that huge areas around these sites are contaminated and unsuitable for growing anything due to the poisons that have leached into the ground and  local watercourses. Plastics will not compress no matter how many times you go over the stuff with a bulldozer, so no matter how much hardcore you pile on top of it, it will never be stable enough to build anything on. The empty spaces created around the plastic eventually fill with water which makes it even more untable and because a lot of waste is not sorted before being buried, even if we covered it with several metres of good quality soil this would eventually become contaminated too and would still end up unusable for anything.

We need land to build houses and for growing food not to bury waste in. Try taking a look at Denmark's environmental policies, they have very few natural resources of their own but they actually import other nations' waste and produce electricity from it. We could do the same if we had the political will, admittedly it would make our electricity very expensive but that's the price we have to pay for living a profligate lifestyle.

Actually waste to energy plants are great in my opinion, we have several here in the Midlands and I wonder why they should be expensive, sutrely burning watse is not that expensive.

In my opinion the cause of the problem is individuals being irresponsible, if we dump all the blame of corporate entities we just excuse individuals and discourage individual responsibility!

As for land fill sites we're not actually using up much land though I do appreciate there may be better solutions!

Re: The 'RANT THREAD' (thread).

Valid point there Lambsy, although businesses are still responsible for many types of pollution it is in their interests not to because of the fines they may face. Drive along a country lane and see the horrendous litter chucked from cars, black bin bags dumped and fly tipping by weekend builders doing a foreigner and you see just how far we have to go. As for the damage done to the seas and its inhabitants well that's just shameful

Re: The 'RANT THREAD' (thread).

A valid point indeed, I'm not trying to apportion all the blame on the supermarkets. I know it is the human race as a whole that is to blame for the world becoming a rubbish tip but there are lots of things that manufacturers could do to improve the situation and the first step is to make all the plastics we use recyclable. Just as an example, when was the last time you saw toothpaste, tomato ketchup, milk, margarine or worst offender of the lot bottled water in anything other than plastic containers? People generally never look at what type of plastic these containers are made of so they invariable get thrown in the dustbin and end up in landfill. In my view we shouldn't be sending anything to landfill, all our waste should be collected by recycling companies and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

At present in our village we have paper & cardboard, glass bottles & cans, garden waste, and kitchen waste all collected at the roadside and taken for recycling by different specialist firms. Just recently they have started collecting plastics too which has to be sorted and the non-recyclable stuff goes to enclosed inceinerators like the one you mentioned. This is way it should be countrywide, I can't remember the last time we sent anything to landfill, the only things left in our rubbish bag at the end of the week are a few pieces of kitchen towel and they go on our own compost heap. This is not rocket science, it's just common sense.

Re: The 'RANT THREAD' (thread).

Carrier bag charges begin in England on 5 October 2015 as part of the policy to reduce waste.

If you’re a large retailer the minimum price is 5p for most single-use plastic carrier bags. If you’re a small or medium-sized business you don’t have to charge, but you’re free to do so voluntarily.

Re: The 'RANT THREAD' (thread).

I have another one...

Spiders.

Why is it spiders always seem to appear en-mass after the wasps have started dying off?

In my garden in the summer, wasps are everywhere, and I can't drink a cup of tea without a wasp or two wanting some too. And there's not a spider to be seen.

But now the wasps have gone, i'm constantly unwittingly walking into spider's webs, spluttering out a couple of strands of silk, as well as worrying a spider has made its way into my barnet.

If there was a God, "intelligent design" would've seen the spiders rise up earlier. But no. Spiders are over-rated...they're just a bunch of draft-dodgers.

interesting reading on plastics in general if not over exagerated

http://ecowatch.com/2014/04/07/22-facts-plastic-pollution-10-things-can-do-about-it/

One thing about plastic bags in tips is that they do not always stay there, just look at the fencing surrounding these tips, the wind takes many of these lighter plastics and rubbish and blowes them back into the enviroment.
