Yes we know it is not the law in every country but do you have a point to make further than that?

When you say it should be stopped is this just a statement of your ethical position or do you believe outside forces should actually take measures to bring the practice to an end?

The laws in each country should make it illegal to have sex with children under 16..

Why 16, why not 18, 17 or 15?

So why not 13 as in Spain and the Vatican City, 14 as in Austria, Germany and Italy, 15 as in Denmark, France and Sweden, 17 as in Cyprus and Ireland or 18 as in Malta and Turkey.

The whole 'age thing' seems to be totally arbitrary.

So in your opinion the law World-wide should be for it to be illegal to have sex with those under 16. So do you think steps should be taken to bring this about or is it just an idealistic view?

There may be a slight possibility it could come about in within the EU.

If for no other reason it would avoid situations as we have at the moment where, for example, a Danish couple, the wife being 15, could come to the UK and the husband be arrested for sleeping with his wife.

I think these ages are set because the girls are deemed to be physically able to consummate a marriage in the case of the eight year old it's pretty obvious with the injuries the poor little mite sustained she was not, not for her a caring first night of marriage!.
In this country children were given in Marriage at a very early age but consummation was left until they were older, not always adhered to but in theory that was the rule.

Well if an 18, 19, 20 year old goes to the USA they can't be sold alcohol so I'd guess abstaining from sex with your 15 year old wife shouldn't be a problem for a short while. There's many laws in many countries which are alien to us but we have to abide by, so no big deal.

However it would seem like an ideal statute to be standardised within the EU, but what age should the age of consent be set at?

The mean age of consent for EU members is 15 with the highest being 18 and lowest 13. So do we go for the mean, highest or lowest?

Not quite the same - a UK citizen can be prosecuted in the UK for sex offences committed overseas - so in the situation that Bank outlined if the husband was a UK citizen he could be prosecuted whether or not he slept with his wife whilst back in the UK.

An 18 year old US citizen drinking alcohol here couldn't be prosecuted on their return to the States.

Que?

Bank outlined a Danish couple; no UK citizen involved, so they may have to abstain from having sex while visiting UK, same as an 18 year old would have to abstain from drinking alcohol while in the USA. If you change the participants to UK citizens then different laws may apply.
You said: "if the husband was a UK citizen he could be prosecuted whether or not he slept with his wife whilst back in the UK."
Please explain because I'm not sure what you are trying to say.

If a UK citizen goes abroad and has sex with a girl under the age of 16 - he can on his return to this country be prosecuted for having sexual relations with an underage girl.

So a UK citizen living in Denmark who married a Danish 15 year old could in theory be prosecuted if he visited the UK even though he has not committed any offence in Denmark nor in the UK.

As I'm sure you know, it's a city state with a zero birthrate and no female citizens, so of what relevance is the age of consent in the Vatican City? Smiley Surprised

No answer required btw, I don't agree with it but understand the point you're labouring towards

In the context of this thread the age of consent in the Vatican City State seems to me to be entirely relevant Smiley Wink

In same context, perhaps you're suggesting that whole thread is irrelevant/meaningless.

Surely not! Smiley Surprised

Ok thanks, I get you now. So this could demonstrate why it may be preferable to standardise the age of consent across the European Union, so what age should we choose and why?
