Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

Yes,i did see it. But now it has media coverage and Ebay dont come out of this smelling of roses.Losing the confidence of buyers at this time of year is going to hit a few sellers.

Pleased to see this has been highlighted in the media and that Ebay have promised to do something about it.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

And they say the same thing every time a story like this reaches the press

This type of scam happens all year round and has anything stopped it yet? No, it hasn't. Despite ebay saying it will do something, they can only act on reports by little ol' members like us on here
They don't have the staff to scour the listings and they certainly have staff who have no clue of the rules at ebay towers working on the chat line. They'd give a better service employing rabbits

Nothing will change BUT, sticking it in the media does mean more and more buyers every year are aware it can happen. It will make more and more buyers aware that ebay does have scammers selling here
And it just makes buyers more aware, full stop

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

Very true Silk, but it also highlights the fact that Ebay is vunerable to scammers, con men, fraudsters etc and as such, potential buyers are more likely to look elsewhere.

Someone in Ebay towers "Public Relations Dept" (if such a dept exists) should try and redress the balance and get this guy an Xbox for his son for Christmas as well as the refund.

The cynics of this world might suggest that could have been the motive for the rush for press coverage.............

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

True, but in days of old this would have been dealt with.  Anyway, the cats out of the bag (again) now and will give buyers something to think about.   I've never rated Ebay's CS since I first signed up, but it's hit an all time low this year coincidently at the time of all the new changes.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

I have to say it.......but fancy buying that and spending that much money on a four year old!!! it was for himself and the child factor is just sympathy hunting.

Yes he was ripped off and I am on his side but ,.,,really?

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

I think the story about it being for the 4 year old was to try to make the seller feel guilty enough to refund. It just snowballed from there.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

The statement was, (as you probably guessed) meant to be very tongue in cheek and not a serious recommendation.

Here we have a 19yr old who has been saving for years to buy  an Xbox for his 4yr old (you do the maths)...Hmmmmmm

Have to agree...............didn't want to comment on the individual circumstances and am more concerned that this sort of thing appears on Ebay.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

This sorry tale has just been on ITV Midlands Today. Call me old fashioned but for goodness sake buy the 4 year old a Bike a Trainset, a Scooter a Sledge. The child will have loads more enjoyment.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

I can't see that Ebay have taken much of a hit.

It has been explained that the buyer will get their money back and a spokesperson from a Trading Standards office has advised buyers should make sure they use Paypal.

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

I can't see how eBay have taken a hit either.

Let's look at the facts. Some numpty who can't read properly hands over £450 and gets sent a photo of an X-box One. Ebay say he'll get a full refund.

Which one looks the one you won't look to for Christmas presents next year (Just not the ones with "photo" in the title)

Re: Ebays reputation takes another hit....

Stevie     Look at it this way.  There is at the moment quite a few scams with both PS4s and Xbox 1s listed on Ebay. Its against the rules for me to list the item numbers but they are there if you look. Some of them blatant , some of them not. Goodness knows how many reports are needed to get them removed !

Ok, only 1 case has made the press but how many dont-there have been a few caught out and i dare say more to come.

I dont think press like this instills confidence with potential buyers.Ok Ebay are not the ones that "take the hit"  Sellers maybe.

I suppose the old adage  "Any publicity is good publicity "  is Ebays view.

A Nottingham gamestore has now  gifted the guy a new Xbox.

Interesting quote from the buyer:

"I've had other people contact me to say they have been stung too, but not reprted it. I don't think I'll be shopping online anymore."

Bought iphone 5s on 10th dec, 13, still not received it, Seller not replying to questions asked, lied twice about when the item was posted. and is refusing to check Royal mail, signature , This all sounds very dodgy.......

I agree never to buy expensive things on ebay.
