I'm not exactly fat. My biggest issue is that I have more weight round my gut than a man of my age should have. I carry no extra weight anywhere else. Also, and just to complicate things, my height had gone down from 6 foot and 1/2 an inch to 5 foot 1 inch. The height has been lost between my neck and my hips and so all my internal organs are squished up into a smaller space than normal. This height loss has been caused by a medical problem that has caused every one of the separating joints in my spine to collapse down to zilch.
Do I eat more than I should? Probably.
Is it the wrong sort of stuff that I shove down my neck? Yes.
What do you need, Steve?
I need the folk in the know to come forward and give details of what I need to be eating in a 24 hour period so that the weight and inches fall off. If an actual list of the foods that I should be eating are available, that would be excellent but if it is only possible to say, "OK, Steve. You need to eat 50% carbs, 25% stuff B and 25% stuff X, that's good enough.
What I would like to do is go on a kind of crash diet for a fortnight and then slowly add extras to keep me alive.
I understand and fully believe the people who say that the only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. That's all well and good and, on days when my body will let me, you may even see me walking round and round the second level of my local hospital using my walking frame (because it is the only flat and circular route that I know off) but on most days I'm either sat in this chair or in bed so getting more exercise isn't an option.
Any advice would be much appreciated but sympathy should be avoided at all costs.
Cheers m'dears,
Steve.

I'd be interested too myself Steve! I've lost an inch in height too....
I have to loose some weight before they'll do my other foot op. I am diabetic, underactive thyroid and 3 of my meds made you gain weight.....
so how the hell am I supposed to loose weight? and I can't walk very well either.
I think the medical profession would do better looking into weight control instead of giving junkies free methadoneX-(
that should get the ball rolling now.....:^O

I wouldn't recommend going on a crash diet, you need to aim at a very slow but constant weight loss, if you can do that maintaining a more healthy weight will be a lot easier.
Avoid refined foods and concentrated on food that is as natural as possible cutting down on carbohydrate and fat.
Eat slowly and make sure you know how much carbohydrate, fat etc you are eating then you can gradually cut down until your weight begins to decrease.
There is some handy info here.

Cucumber and celery have negative energy. Your body uses more calories to digest them, than what was in them to start with.

Man cannot live on cucumber and celery alone. 😉
More protein, less carbohydrate. Make sure any carbs you do eat are slow release. Do eat some, cos high protein diets that exclude carbs (or minimise them greatly) can cause kidney problems. Avoid sugar ... and its substitutes. Don't drink fruit juice. Eat the whole fruit instead (but only about 2-3 pieces a day, if poss).

Call me Mr Thicko if you like (I've been called worse) but here's something that I don't quite understand.
If the trolls post on a weekend because there is a lack of moderation where are all the troll's posts disappearing to? At least 4 have done a bunk.

Good Evening Stevie 🙂
Re Dieting.
Just a suggestion but maybe it may be more helpful if you got your doctor to refer you to a dietician if you are concerned about your weight.
For someone who is very imobile it can be a big strain on your whole system being over weight. As I understand it you have a few serious health issues so it maybe wiser to consult a dietician with the backing of your doctor as reduciing and increasing certain foods may have more of a detrimental affect on someonelike like yourself. Your motabolism and body needs will be completely different to someone who is mobile. Some foods and nutrients that may put weight on me might infact be something your body would need more of and visa versa.
By the way, I find many of your posts most interesting and intrigue me very much, plus many of the sensible answers you get. You certainly know how to ask the most complicated or strange ones. Makes a change TBH.:-)

Cheers, Busty. You're probably right about seeing the doc about how to lose a bit of weight. I'll do that on either Monday or Tuesday..
03-06-2013 12:35 AM
Hi Steve...........one easy way is to only eat half of what you normally eat, save the other half and eat it later. With a sensible diet (, fruit veg,,lean meat, wholemeal bread, etc) this somehow works !!
Many years ago we all had gastric bands........these were rigid waistbands on skirts and trousers and we stopped eating when they felt tight..........maybe the NHS could save millions by putting chains around folks waists and tightening them weekly !!....

i have the same problems as captain in post 2 basically cut out all surgary foods and drinks and eat 3 meals a day but you also need exercise and i know that for some including me that is hard but if you have a swimming pool near you that is a good form of exercise .
03-06-2013 8:41 PM
Well I wonder who reported all the ( innocuous) posts???????

Steve,
Cut out all the carbs and sugars for a while and just eat loads of vegetables and fruit, cooked and raw, as much as you like and when you like. Eat a moderate portion of protein every day: fish would be excellent, but a small piece of meat, chicken or cheese would be fine as well.
It's a bit strange to get used to in the beginning as bread is a no no and potatoes, rice and pasta is also "forbidden", so no nice sandwiches, fry-ups, no Sunday roast (only the veg) and no pot noodles! :^O
But you will loose weight if you stick to it and you will actually start to feel better for it, as you will get much more vitamins and minerals this way into your system.
Good luck!
04-06-2013 4:30 AM
WOW!!! ... DH, you really know how to hurt a guy, don't you? No Pot Noodles? I may as well not eat at all . :^O
I've got an appointment to see the doc about this dieting malarkey this afternoon so I'll see what she has to say about it. I'll tell her what you said but without naming the source. The thing is, I think that I could live with the idea of eating from a bowl of veg with a side bowl of fruit and just picking at it as the day goes by. As for eating fish, I generally have 2 slices of toast spread with mackerel but the down side of that is that it comes in tomato sauce.
Anyway, let's wait and see what tomorrow brings (or later today)
Cheers,
Steve.

The mackerel might come in tomato sauce but it does have nutritional information on the tin so you will know what you are eating, plus it does have those all important fish oils.
Make sure the bread is as wholemeal as you can get, the more seeds, other bits, field mice bones etc. it contains the longer it will satisfy you. 🙂
