Banning smoking in public places.

I see it's being suggested for parts of London. The start of something bigger I hope, though I am sure the smokers think it's the beginning of the end of the World.

You have a very low opinion of your fellow man, would it not be better to encourage them to give up rather than insulting them?

Well said, Evo. I suppose the next salute will be that the little men in grey suits (and the OP) will want to ban anyone whistling in public, on the premise that it could cause those who abstain from such anti-social behaviour, to contract Tinnitus.

Sound ridiculous ? No more absurd than the present barmy proposition.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

Whilst I love being able to go to pubs and restaurants without smoke I was not and am not in favour of a smoking ban.  Seperate room, seperate premises but if people want to smoke let them- just not where it interferes with me.

My main concern is what next?.  We have a smoking ban.  We are going to have a minimum alcohol price.  We will have higher prices forced on us for sweets and chocolates(as soon as they figure out how) and sugar. Then the high fat crisps, chips, etc.  then they will ban butter, not to mention beef(methane)

Big brother.

Me I am overweight, I eat too much, I love sugar in drimks, I love chocolate and sweets and I enjoy the odd drink - my last drink was April!!!.  I don't indulge in any of it often because I really cannot afford to.  I also do not exercise enough.  Burden on the health service?  Hmm average length of time between Doctors is several years, been in hospital twice and now on my 3rd, once an odd thing, second was down to childbirth, third is cataracts and anybody who escapes those is lucky.  Yet, apart from smoking, I am anathema to the powers that be, because I have an unhealthy life style. Hmm?.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

Typical smoker, just point in all directions shouting  LOOK AT THEM! LEAVE ME ALONE! Yes alcohol has it's issues, plenty of them. Thing is, you can point at the holocaust in defense of your wanting to smoke where and when you want with a complee disregard for the (dis)comfort of others, but none of it makes any sense.

It's not only about being harmed, though I suspect that there is no such thing as some harmless cigarette smoke. It's about getting hit with the foul smelling assault on the senses from the effluent of a drug addict. I find that particularly offensive when out in what is supposed to be fresh air.

Seconded, with the one proviso that the smokers tyrany (if you don't like YOU leave!) is not allowed to extent to areas where the normal and non addicted public would also like to be. To be honest, the very fact that these people light up where they like is one of the reasons this nasty disease is so difficult to wipe out.

Kids see, kids do. And it IS kids who are the victims of this filthy disease.

Your comparison between smoking & the Holocaust not only is ridiculous but very offensive!

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I did not make a comparison, I pointed out that smokers point at bad things to divert from the fact that they are drug addicts who directly and unpleasantly effect those around them. Would you prefer world war 1, world war two, slavery...the mention of which one offends you the most?

Well I don't know from where you gleaned that bit of information. The litter you speak of wouldn't be from empty drink cans and cartons, polystyrene take-away trays, sweet and chocolate wrappers, crisp bags, plastic carrier bags, soiled nappies, half eaten kebabs and pizzas, etc, etc, would it,  ? No of course not, just a few fag ends and the odd empty cigarette packet.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I can't remember where I read it, somewhere.

What I DO know is that smokers don't seem to consider their fag ends to BE litter. And yet again, let's point to SOMETHING ELSE- pizza boxes, KFC rubbish- just don't look at us smokers!

Honestly, it's just so predictable! The buses, the cars, the KFC boxes, just leave us alone! 🙂

The way smokers just discard their fag ends (often out of car windows) is a bit special, pretty much no other litterer would do that without know it was wrong.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

You assume that all smokers litter. It is no different to dog owners some pick up their poo and some dont.

their are smokers who defend their right to smoke and non smokers who defend their right not to. I have friends who smoke and friends who don't the ones who don't don't judge those who do.

The point I made about alcohol was valid as it also affects other peoples lives.

By the way I haven't said if I am a smoker or not and it is not for you to assume.

The vast majority do litter. They take that least drag, and, in the absense of a convenient ashtray they will flick it away without a second thought. What is abnormal for most people is normal behaviour for the smoker. It's not my judgement, it's a simple fact.

You point about alcohol is a seperate issue completely.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

When cutting our hedge at the weekend we filled a small bin bag with beer cans, pop cans, sweet rappers, crisp rappers, sandwich packaging. Obviously the only people that matter to you are the smokers who litter not anyone else. We worked hard to tidy OUR hedge and remove other peoples careless casts off. But that doesn't count because they weren't fag ends.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

I've never noticed many fag ends around our way,but what I do notice is horse poo,on the path on the road and splattered over your car by driving over it if you're unlucky enough,I've even seen police horses dropping their lot in the city centre.maybe we should locate all these horse riders and let our dogs **bleep** outside their door

I'm sick of stupid People coming out with stupid ideas, when they can't even come close to policing the laws they've got already. Lets try sorting that one out first shall we............the sad people that come out with these "Nanny State" ideas really need to get a life AND a proper job !!...................................and yes I am a NON smoker.

If the Government really wanted to stop things happenning that were bad for us they would impose very severe penalties.

Get caught using a mobile phone whilst driving,1 month ban and 6 points.Do it again,12 month ban.Do it again,3 year ban.

The fact that they now allow cars that have a screen on the dash that links to fb,txt and email WHILE YOU DRIVE clearly shows that they don't care.

I heard one guy on tv being asked about safety issues and he replied that it's what people want.Smiley Mad

With that attitude i expect we will see drinking and driving made legal with built in minibars fitted in the dashboards of all new cars.

Re: Banning smoking in public places.

You are extremely offensive yourself.

I am a smoker and have been for a long time. However I was and still am in complete agreement with the smoking ban in restaurants, pubs, or anywhere public indoors, even though I find it inconvenient at times.

Back when smoking was allowed everywhere, I often organised social events for my friends and I ALWAYS booked the non smoking area of the restaurant, or the non smoking cabin of the plane etc, because I didn't want my non smoking freinds to suffer the effects of the smokers among us.. They in turn were often considerate enough to accommodate us too.

Now that smoking is not allowed anywhere indoors, I still try to be considerate. I stand away from people, always stand downwind etc and I carry a small tin with a tight fitting lid to use as an ashtray so that I NEVER drop a fag end in the street.

Your comparison to slavery and wars is rediculous, and it's an insult to the brave lads who fought to compare their sacrifice to something so trivial. Many is the soldier in the trenches who's only relief from the misery was a ciggie.

Yes, it's a dirty habit I admit, but don't suggest that I do it without regard for the feelings and comfort of others. I'm sure there are some who dislike things you do, but you do it anyway.

I take it you have no vices?  Oh to be perfect !!!

The house on the corner from Me is rented and my kitchen stinks when they go on the backstep to smoke
