DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

In normal cases books with errors like this are usually worthless, unlike with things like stamps where errors can greatly increase the value, book collectors usually want perfection.

However it may be different with collectors of the Harry Potter books they seem to like to collect the more obscure editions as well as the true first editions, so there may be some value in your book. The only way to tell would be to list it and find out.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

The minimum reserve is £50 and personally I would be doubtful it would be worth that much. I would do an advanced search as to what prices the book is getting without the error and maybe start a few pounds over that.

It's quite possible that no one will want it, but its only 10p to list so worth a punt.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi, I've got volumes 1 to 3 of Rollin's Ancient History - 1847, clothbound and in a fairly poor condition. The page edges seem rough cut and have gathered dust accordingly. The fold out maps that other copies have seem to be missing 😞 in fact the only 'redeeming' feature that these seem to have is the signature of Peter Denny, (shipbuilder Dumbarton Scotland) in 1850. Are these likely to be of interest of anyone or should I just drop them into a charity shop?
Thanks, C.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all. I wonder if any of you have seen a copy of this change hands:
An Apology for Socrates and Negotium Posterorum, by Sir John Eliot, edited by Grosart, limited to 100 copies. (Two vols). 1881.

I can find plenty out about Sir John and the writing of the book, and about Grosart, but the only copies I can track down (apart from mine) are firmly attached to libraries. Possible fly in ointment: the space in mine for copy number has been left blank, in spite of the assurances that the edition has been "rigidly limited" to 100 and "Proofs and waste sheets have been destroyed". Hum. So mine is number 101? Please help (and yes call me Duck if you like).

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Bingo! That's it! It actually is EXACTLY the same- I've ABEd for it dozens of times with no luck. Gold star, Owl. Many thanks- now I must go- coincidentally, there's a man at the door come to put up an owl box for me. (I gather there's a barn-owl housing shortage and I offered to take in lodgers).

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

In a mid-19th century unpaginated book published in London, would it have been rare or common to change from numbers, for the gatherings signatures, to letters in different editions/printings? What would it mean? I'm looking specifically at the 1841 English Hexapla published by Samuel Bagster. Some printings have letters and some have numbers. Which would have come first?

Thanks, Linda

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi Everyone
This is my forst time on the UK board though I have been buying and selling on the Aussie board for a little while.

Anyway I have a question that I hope someone may be able to help me with. I have tried Googling and haven't come up with any results so far. A couple of weeks ago I bought a magazine in a second hand bookshop. Its called 'The Violet Magazine', Romantic stories for the long evenings. The price is 7d. I has the month of October on it but no year. Judging by the sketches of the people throughout the magazine I would estimate that it was published sometime in the 1930s. All of the advertising relates to English products and addresses.

If it would help I could scan and include a couple of pics here.

Thank you in advance for any assistance in pointing me in the right direction. I'd like to find out a bit more about the publication.

Robyn

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello and Welcome, Robyn.

So far I have found ... The Violet Magazine.

Scroll down to Volume 5. Harmsworth/Amalgamated Press.

Not much help, I'm afraid, but I'll carry on looking.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

The only other item of relevance which I can find is the the catalogue entry at the British Library.

If you want to try and find a value for it you will probably have to contact a dealer who specialises in magazines.

I did a search on, “Girls’ Friend Library.”, but it didn't help.
