DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hmmm. Often the illustrator will be named on the title page.

Are these just frontis illustrations or are there several spotted throughout the book?

Are we talking SPCK publications here? Some of them can be collectable, but most were just religious indoctrination for kids.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Some of them are SPCK and some Blackie, I haven't looked at them for a while but I always thought what nice covers some of them had. The illustrations vary, some just one at the front, some with a few through the book. I have read them all, some not bad, some dreadful tripe!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

The simple answer, apparently so.

Hope yours is in better condition.

But don't forget that the value of a thing is placed on it by a buyer who is willing to back up his valuation with cash.

Anything else is a dealer's guess as to what he thinks it should sell for. Note that the item quoted above is FOR SALE, so no guarantee that it is priced correctly. When/if it sells, then you'll know what to ask for your copy.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi Sigma and thanks for your help and the linek. I did search but didnt find! I'm not too sure what the abe seller has only half of but everything would appear to be present with this copy. The book is hand sewn into a green shiny material which covers the boards. Should I remove it or sell as is. I can see the spine top and bottom.I think the cover was placed early in its life judging by the way a number has been written then added to the spine. Any advice as to pricing for auction please ?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Unless your name is Bayntun (very good book-binders) don't mess with the binding. The one on ABE would seem to have half of the spine panel missing.

If it isn't original it will have an effect on price. The more original an item, the more a collector will pay.

As to pricing for auction, hmmm. It really depends on what it cost you and how brave you are. Yes, the ABE item is £200 - but it hasn't yet sold. On eBay you'll probably have to start at a low price to pull in the bidders.

Mind you, that doesn't always work either.

A bit of gambling involved.

It has specially drawn illustrations by W. Thronton Sheills and is published by Odhams Press Limited , Long Acre, London W.C.2.There is no publishing date but the condition is lovelt a quite small book 6" x 9". I would just love to know more about it. There is also a similar book same binding called "How Much do you know". Any help or ideas would be gratefully recieved.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi,

I am New to the Books Board and I hope I am not jumping in at the wrong part of a thread.

I seen Easton Press Books mentioned a couple of times in this thread and I have a quick question on Easton Press Books.

I am thinking of buying one but the seller confirms that there is no ISBN associated with it. How do you identify the edition, print # etc. for these books?

Thanks,

Michael

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Easton Press is a US publisher of nice bindings and limited editions, a bit like the UK Folio Society, but not quite.

As most of their issues are limited editions I would expect each volume to have a limitation page confirming it.

Other publishing details will be printed inside the book as with any other tome. You don't need an ISBN to identify edition/impression - all those books published before the ISBN system was instituted are not complete mysteries as their publishing details usually appear in the usual place on the reverse of the title page, although some publishers put that info elsewhere in the book.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Sorry, Leon. Nowhere I know has a copy. Have you tried visiting the website of the publisher. It will probably be in German, but you can always email them - they'll have someone who speaks English on staff.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a question of my own. Actually it's probably guidance I seek.

I just finished watching the last of my 54 Babylon 5 video tapes. It was a couple of years since I last went through them all.

Behind the last 3 tape cases I found a book I'd forgotten I had, and hadn't rated particularly highly when I knew it was there.

Lyrics of a Lowbrow by Robert Service ('51 Benn 1st in Dw).

I've checked the usual sources, ABE, Addall, etc. Not a single copy for sale anywhere. I did notice that ABE have several Benn publications of his from around that time (1948 to 1954), and all at asking prices in the hundreds of dollars, but not a mention of this title.

Anyone any clues as to Mr Service's current popularity level?

There is currently a copy puporting to be this item on eBay now. I'm certain mine is a first - it states it quite clearly on the publication page - yet mine has orange cloth boards and the item for sale has black cloth.

Hmmm.

Re: Lyrics of a Lowbrow.

Found one copy without dj at $225 (Canadian).

He seems to have a dedicated niche following. I would be optimistic of a good sale on ebay, but not one to start at a low price.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

That would seem to be the U.S. edition, even though he has added 'London' to that. Dodd Mead were Service's U.S. publishers.

I seem to recall it costing me all of £1. The wrapper is a bit crumpled on the top edge with a couple of small nicks, but otherwise okay and unclipped. A little bumping to the upper points, but the orange cloth is unmarked and the contents nice and clean.

I could list it and start it at just about any price. But I'm open to suggestions as to what would be sensible.

He has a small following. If it were mine, I'd start off at around £50, then reduce on the relist according to the interest generated.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hmm. Listing at £50 will add 150% to the book's cost with possible relisting required.

How about I offer a bargain at £29.99 for half the listing fee and add an extra pic or use the gallery?

Thanks for the guidance. Always useful to have another view on these things.
