DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Well, B&MC put it at £4,000 to £6,000 in a contemporary leather binding in issue 190 Jan. 2000.

The later rebind will put quite a dent in that.

If you snagged a real bargain (trans. got it cheap) I'd suggest offering it on eBay.com at a black hole starting price (causes extreme gravitation towards itself). Just make sure you start it for more than you paid.

Well done, Lordship. Please drop a hint if you list it, so that we can nourish our envy buds.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Is it worth mentioning it on the US Board - I'm sure Fine.books would have suggestions, although it's a bit new for him, isn't it? 🙂

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I think £300-£400 is probably more realistic.

I've had a decent but not exhaustive "go-through", and it has some good and bad points. I know these early bibles are rarely complete, but I have found 4 missing leaves so far. On the plus side, there seems to be a whole extra section at the end entitled "The Whole Book of Psalmes Collected Into English Meeter, by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins and others..." and this section has the music laid out in staves. It has the same date (1629) and printer as the rest of the bible.

The title page of this section has the lovely quote "....and moreover [to be sung] in private houses, for their godly solace and comfort, laying apart all ungodly songs and ballads, which tend only to the nourishing of vice, and corrupting of youth"

Can I assume that you want to see pictures of the book and not my dwellings?

I will post a few in the appropriate thread over the next few days.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I've offered to sell some unwanted books for my mother-in-law on e-bay. They are mainly hardback first editions.
I've checked the usual sites for valuations and e-bay of course but a lot of them are rare and not recently listed. The other sites show some of them for around £40/£60. I realise though this is just what the dealer hopes to get for them. How do I price them for e-bay? Should I take what they are listed for on other sites and take say £10.00 off. I realise these are not hugely valuable but for the sake of family harmony, I don't want to get this wrong.

Listing on eBay is a minefield.

Many say that starting items at the lowest price you are willing to accept is the best policy. I'm in there.

But you also have to consider the fees. A start price of 4.99 will cost you 20p - a start price of 5.00 costs 35p. I never saw any point in paying 15p to make a penny.

Books listed on ABE and other such sites as for sale at those prices you saw are just that - for sale. It could be that the price is why they aren't sold. Books often sell for a lot less on eBay, but can sometimes sell for a lot more.

Really it all depends on just what the goodies are and how many out there desire them sufficiently to part with money for them..

The problem is they are all on subjects I'm not familiar with. If it was me I'd start them at a couple of pounds. I think I'll get the hubbie to decide, then it's his fault if it goes pearshaped.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a tome that is proving a problem to research as to other people's prices.

I can find 2nd impressions for sale. I found one first impression, but without a wrapper.

The book is.....

The Tree That Sat Down by Beverley Nichols, Cape 1945 1st in Dw. Illustrated by Isobel and John Morton-Sale.

Anyone any ideas?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

It's very scarce. Later editions seem to be fetching about £30 on ebay. I'd start it off at £40-£50 and see what happens.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

It doesn't owe me much, and it has a small loss at the spine head of the Dw which has allowed the top 3mm or so of cloth to be sunned, so I thought a £29.99 start.

Maybe on Thursday, and I can use the free gallery pic and subtitle - any ideas on what to put in that?

The main title will be.....

NICHOLS Beverley = THE TREE THAT SAT DOWN 1st UK in Dw.

I've never used the subtitle thing. I think the above, apart from a description, just about says it all. I suppose mention of the Morton-Sale artwork could be a subtitle matter.

Suggestions?
