DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi there,

I have a copy of fairy tales and stories by Hans Christian Anderson. it is obviously fairly old and states at the front London: Ye Mitre Press 30 Fetter Lane E.C.It gives no indication as to date. On the back page it states printed by Sully and Ford Ltd, Plough Court Fetter Lane.....I am confused. I have been unable to identify it through research....would you

1) know anything about it?

2) Hazard a guess at what it might be worth.

Thanks

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Are there illustrations? If so, who did them?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Yes there are but there is no indication as to who the illistrator is. Their is a memoir of the author at the beginning of the book which is ended with the initials C.P.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

With no evidence whatsoever to back up my theory, my guess is that this is a late Victorian "pirate" edition. Anderson was so popular in the late 19th Century that copyright piracy was rife.

What do you think?

Was beginning to look something like that to me, too.

Odd publisher.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thanks for the above.

Given that it might be a pirate copy...Do you think that it is worth keeping? Or are there so many that it is nit worth it?

Somebody somewhere will be happy to have it.

Give it a try and see what happens.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Not sure if anyone can help, but my parent in laws have two sets of books which they are thinking about selling and not sure if it is really worth it.

The books are ninth & tenth editions of the Encyclopedia Britannica, one of the volumes they have given me has a crest and the name of "Cecil Seymur Vandeleur D.S.O." and is dated 1889

If they are not worth anything, then no point in trying to sell them, would anyone have any idea, ie worth nothing, could be worth something or we could get quite a bit for them?

Cheers.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

As encyclopedias they are a little out of date now.

As nice bindings they may be desirable.

But you do tend to see old sets of Brittanica standing in corners in charity shops for months on end.

The fact that they are 19th century may encourage someone to buy. Just have to give them a go.

Your main problem is going to be shipping costs.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello Manor_House - I need your advice AGAIN. Picked up a nice copy of Sons of the Swordmaker by Maurice Walsh. First edition 1938, W & R Chambers Ltd. green cloth boards, gilt lettering to spine with a thirties d/j not price-clipped and signed VB. Wh is VB? As this is a paper d/j the previous owner has, I think, reinforced the back with thin brown paper - very neatly done. Is this a big no-no?

At the beginning and end of each story in Faber's book of favourite fairy tales there are the most delightful scrolls with animals and birds etc. About 1" deep and across full length of script. How best to describe. I thought vignette!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Maurice Walsh has a following on ebay. The little designs are vignettes. No idea who VB is (Valeriy Borzov, Victor Borge?). Sure as eggs is eggs, it isn't Maurice Walsh. The reinforcements to the dj shouldn't affect the value.
