DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Right, I'm with you. Don't think it would have much bearing on its saleability - it is signed which has more relevance. But, is it o.k. to click onto the little 1st edition box, even tho. it's a fifth impression?

Thanks, Steve.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Don't see why not. It is a first edition, even if it isn't first state.

People list paperbacks in first editions. I've even seen handbags listed in there. So I shouldn't think anyone will mind.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

But do point out, in the description, that it is a fifth impression.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Old-time book collectors tend to say "First edition", when they actually mean "First edition, first impression". The first edition thing only matters for fiction and great literary works.

Much as I admire Rick Stein, I don't think he falls into this category.

I didn't think for one minute that he did, Manor House. I like to list as accurately as I can.:-)

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi, can anybody tell me why National Geographicals are not collectable, I know that they are now available on disc but still I am baffled. They are wonderful reference works with beautiful photography and allow you to capture the time they were written and those wonderful maps ideal for framing. Is it just me or do other people appreciate them and do you think there will be a day when they will become more collectable? You can pick them up in charity shops for peanuts and sometimes still with the maps stapled in.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Most collectable things arrive there through rarity. As you say, stacks of National Geographic can be found in most charity shops priced at next to nothing. Too many of them for them to be considered collectable.

I've no doubt there are collectors of them out there, and that there are probably scarce issues. But I don't know anyone who actually collects them.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

This book seems strangely scarce

Mediterranean Wild Flowers (Collins Field Guide)
Marjorie Blamey, Christopher Grey-Wilson (1998) ISBN: 0002199017

Anyone got any ideas? Is it scarce and desirable, or scarce and best forgotten?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I found it in the jungle - 2 copies, Used and New from £79.95. I suppose one could wait and see if they sell.

I didn't look who was selling. It wasn't you, was it?

As you can see from this lot....

A&C Black seem to have republished it. Must've been popular.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

So, would that suggest that the originals are desirable?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Possibly. Might have to offer it up to the great god 'eBay' for proper disposition, though.

Or would that be dispensation?

I thought only chemists dispensed, but, apparently, popes do a bit on the side as well.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Must be having a psychic day: I looked at those this morning when thinking of listing mine. 😞 Well, just the one half of the partnership, unfortunately. Marjorie Blamey was once very popular in Botanical Painting circles - her illustrations are beautifully rendered - but she seems to have been overtaken by Margaret Stevens, Siriol Sherlock and the like. Think I'll hang onto mine.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Considering the behaviour of many popes through history, Borgia ones and such, I wouldn't put anything past 'em.

I meant Gina Davis. Whoops.

Well, she did just become the first female US president, didn't she?

I'm sure I saw it on a TV somewhere.
