A few more details would be helpful but I'll have a guess - is it the BALANCE5 code? If so you need to read the Ts&Cs - click on 'See details' next to the code on the Item page or see here:

Essentially that code can only be used when paying with eBay balance, can only be used once, has to be for a purchase of at least £10 and a minimum payment of £10 must be made using your eBay balance.
I tried using that code with a purchase this morning and only found out the above when checkout rejected the code and wouldn't apply the discount.
To be honest it's not much use if you don't have an eBay balance and you'll only have an eBay balance if you sell on eBay, so it's absolutely no use to people like me who don't sell.
