May be something to do with the uncertainty in the world at present. People losing jobs, those with jobs don't feel job security, so perhaps people tightening their belts, saving their money, and not spending as freely as before.
We need to return to a saner, safer world , and I'm sure things will pick up all round in many quarters of life !
