Rude buyer

I sent a book off on the 7th of April and have proof of posting sent Second Class Recorded delivery.  There has been a long weekend in place and I have been with eBay for nearly 20 years and 100% feedback.  I had an abusive message from the buyer calling me a scammer and did not believe I was 74 years old because they had not received the book yet.  This is an expensive book up to £50 so I sent the proof of postage and the tracking is logged on the page.  So now I cannot use eBay or Paypal as it has not been delivered yet. We have a pandemic going on and in certain parts of the country, it is taking longer than where I live in London. I said to him why didn't you contact me directly instead of putting in a claim with eBay.  If it had not reached him by next week I would have given him a refund and made a claim.  Royal Mail's recorded voice has said it is on its way. The problem is if he doesn't get the book by the 24th then they will take the money out of my account.  If he does get the book and a refund what then?

It's actually better for both parties if a buyer opens a case under eBay's money back guarantee. That way, if the item doesn't arrive the refund is processed through eBay and the seller's 10% fee is refunded. In the present situation you would hope that buyers would be a bit more patient - after all, they have 30 days in which to open a case.

Many of the problems people ask about here are result from either the buyer or the seller trying to resolve the problem themselves. In fact, one of the most common reasons for sellers receiving defects on their account is that they tried too hard to help the buyer, and issued a refund without following the procedure that eBay requires.

As regards "If he does get the book and a refund what then?" I'm afraid you just have to hope that your buyer is honest. If a sellers is required to refund for an item not received, and the buyer then keeps both the refund and the item when it arrives, eBay does nothing to support the seller. EBay will turn a blind eye to this, even when the seller has tracking proof of delivery.

Another one for the BBL. How ignorant some members can be.
