selling for lost

As a private seller on ebay it seems i may need to pay vat on items i sell but if i have to add the tax on top of the price to cover my lost then no one would want to buy giving it getting more expensive to buy on ebay now with buyer having to pay the selling fee?? . think in time (very soon) there will be no private sellers on ebay and sadly ebay will be no more as they will be the most expensive site to buy from .....

I'm not sure what you mean here, what new VAT are you referring to that you have to pay?

Are you asking about eBay's new Buyer Protection Fee that's added to private seller listings?

Sorry i need more details before i can fathom what your talking about,

Everybody pays vat where it is due only businesses registered for VAT can charge it.

So  an example of where your a re forced to charge would be nice.

adding to the advice already given -

As you have private feedback you cannot sell and in any event, as a private seller you cannot charge/collect  VAT.

I received a message from ebay stating

HMRC changes >>update your account
We're getting in touch to let you know about the UK digital sales reporting law. This law requires marketplaces like eBay to collect and report seller information if you meet one of these thresholds: 30 or more sales, or sales exceeding £1740 in a calendar year.

which to me looks as if they will charge me tax on what i sell?? so i would have to inc this fee to protect myself which in not fair for buyers

That is nothing to do with tax vat or anything it is a reporting threshold, They are informing you of the reporting level and with the look of the message they believe you are a business on the wrong account

HMRC changes >>update your account they want you to update your account possibly to a business account.

This is important and should not be ignored as the legal consequences can be very harsh.

as a private seller i agree i can not charge or collect  VAT/TAX but can work it out and add it to the selling price which like i say is unfair to buyers plus i would not sell any items

As already pointed out, you've hit a reporting threshold and need to supply eBay with your National insurance Number.

It doesn't mean that you have to pay any tax to HMRC if you're just selling off your own personal items, such as bits from your wardrobe/loft/garage.

You're not going to be charged tax on anything; eBay's information page about the new digital reporting regulations is here.

All online selling platforms now have to report information to HMRC if you sell more than 30 items and/or more than ~£1,700 in transactions during a calendar year. If you hit either threshold they are obliged to request your national insurance number to include with their report. This has nothing to do with your tax obligations nor does it mean you have any tax to pay.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

so you can only sell 2.5 items a month or sell a item a day for a month then don't sell any more items or you will be reported to HMRC .

as i said before whats the point in selling on ebay

ebay has my

full name

address

then force you to give bank info or you can no longer sell on ebay

plus they force you to give your paypal info if you want to make a offer on a item

they can  request my national insurance number which i have to decline. for safety reasons  next they ask for passport and driving licence.

thid is how bad ebay as became & why i get put off and feel unsafe....

Having your activity reported to HMRC, and having to pay tax are two entirely different things.

If you are a private seller, selling off your own personal items, it is highly unlikely that you will be liable for tax on the proceeds of these sales. (Capital Gains Tax may be payable on any single sale of £6,000 or more).

eBay is legally compelled to report activity over that threshold. As @4_bathrooms has stated above, and I have repeated, it doesn't mean that you will be paying any tax on these sales.

Read the link that was provided to you in the last response.
