Morning all, I have just received a message from a buyer who won one of my auction items claiming he didn't put that bid on. Apparently he sent offers which were declined, so doesn't understand how he could have won the auction (it only had his bid on it). My instinct is to let it go and ask him to cancel (I don't think I should cancel it myself, after all, he is the one not wanting to go ahead). But before I do, I would like to know if a glitch like this could actually happen?

Thank you, I guess this is what happened. I have sent them a message saying they can request a cancellation

You can never rule out an eBay glitch. However, many buyers tap on things on their phone and only think about what they've done afterwards, so the buyer most likely did place the bid, and either didn't remember or now regrets it. There is no point in asking this "buyer" to proceed with the purchase (you can ask but not force), all that would do is create a guaranteed return. Tell the buyer to request a cancellation. If they don't do that then let the item go down the unpaid item process.
You can put the buyer on your blocked list in the meantime.

If you have messages from him saying he didn't bid and does not want the item, can't you just cancel using 'buyer requested to cancel', so sorting it out and avoiding any strikes? No idea how it could happen though.

thank you for your reply, have messaged the buyer and if he wants to cancel, that's fine with me
