When an item of mine sells these days (oh rare event indeed), I get a mail from ebay entitled
You got paid for [whatever item has just sold]
No I didn't. Ebay got paid. And I'm not going to get my money for a considerable time.
Can we have a message with a truthful subject instead?

Agreed, ebay received the money, which they will sit on for as long as they can to earn interest/invest.
You do not have any ownership interest in these investments and any interest earned from these investments will be retained by us. To the extent you may have any beneficial ownership in the interest or proceeds of these investments, your acceptance of these terms constitutes an assignment of any right, title or interest therein to us.

Indeed, 'your buyer just paid for......' would be much more accurate.

Or
"Your buyer just paid us for your item. Typically we will pay you for your item 48 hours after delivery is recorded by our system which is usually working properly. In the unfortunate event that it isn't we will look after your money for 14 days at no extra charge. It's completely free. We would like to thank you for your continued loyalty.
