I was contacted about an item not working
Apologies and told them to open a return and use the tracking label provided and I would refund when it went into the post
The tracking says Depatched so I refunded to save the buyer waiting
Buyer bought a replacement from me
Couple days in and I can no longer see the tracking details for the return???
Ive messaged the buyer to say the new one is on the way and has he posted the return (i dont think he has)
Whats happened to my tracking number and if Ebay have closed the case is there any trail that includes the number or should I have written it down??? Weird

Sorry to say when you issue a refund before the item has been returned the buyer is no longer required to send the item back and the return postage label won't be available to them. All you can do now is hope the buyer returns it under their own steam.

Might the tracking number be included in an email, even if it has 'disappeared' from eBay tracking (due to the case being closed because you refunded early).

Hi. Thanks. I already checked that but all emails just include a link to the return details.

If the tracking said the return had been dispatched, I can see how you would have assumed it was on its way, so it would be ok for you to refund before the item arrived.
Unfortunately, it's probably like when you purchase a postage label and eBay automatically mark the item as dispatched, even though it hasn't been. The tracking should not say an item has been dispatched until it really has been dispatched!

You should never refund until the item has been received, how do you know what condition it will be in, or even if it will be the same item?
As soon as a label has been purchased through Ebay, it is marked as dispatched, but the buyer could then just not send it back.

Have you looked in your postage labels section of the selling hub to see if the label you provided is there.
