What percentage does ebay take from a sale?

If you sell something how much does ebay take from it? Asking because the last item I sold  sold for decidedly more but ebay took less from it in fees. So how does that work? Do they take the same percentage for everything regardless? How can something over £100 only be £4 fees but something under £40 cost £6?

When your item sells,  eBay take a seller fee of 12.8% plus 30p on all the money received from the sale,  including on any postage you charged.

If you add any optional listing upgrades,  these all come with a non refundable listing fee, payable sale or no sale,  and charged the second the item  goes live.

Here is a list of the more common listing upgrades you can select

A reserve will cost 4% of your set reserve.

Subtitles £2

Gallery Plus Photos £2.50

Listings in 2 categories 35p

1-3 day listing duration 35p

Classifed ads used primarily for selling vehicles,  has a non refundable listing fee of £19.99

Private sellers get free basic listings- these can be auctions (with a duration of 5 days or longer) or fixed price Buy It Now listings.

The Motors category has its own fee structure though, so if you're listing a vehicle you'll need to check this.

If you add extras to your basic listings such as a reserve, a subtitle, or gallery plus you will incur fees which are payable even if the item doesn't sell. These fees are shown on the listing form, before you click 'list with displayed fees'

This page shows all of the optional upgrades and what they cost:

If your item sells, eBay will take a final value fee which will be 12.8% of the buyer’s payment (o that includes the postage as well) + 30p (in most categories the fee is 12.8%, but the jewellery category will be increased in March)

Private seller fees:

If you get the 70/80% off Final Value Fees offer then obviously you pay less.

You also pay more if the buyer is overseas, & there are optional extras that will increase your fees.

Go into your account and you'll see a full breakdown of fees.

The lower cost item looks about right, the higher cost item appears to have benefited from a 70% selling fee promotion for private sellers.

Roughly the £100 sale fee would be £12.80 plus 30p so £11.10

With 70% off it is £3.84 plus 30p so £4.14

Most private sellers get these promos every 2 or 3 weeks. If you opt in and list when it's active, the saving is applied automatically on the sale.

Thank you. Yes that makes more sense now, I'd forgot I'd listed the first one under a selling fee promotion but not the second and couldn't work out why it was higher. Seems you save quite a bit with the offers!

Yes, worth waiting for them if you're not in a hurry to sell but of course you can't guarantee getting them 😄
