Simple Delivery compensation for items not covered by the carriers

kat@ebay has just updated a question I asked yesterday on the weekly chat.

https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Chat-with-the-eBay-Community/Weekly-Chat-with-the-eBay-Community-Tea...

I asked about the items that you can send via Evri/RM that don't have compensation for loss/damage - vinyl records, china, glass etc.

Kat's reply

Hi @ruby*ryan ,

I'm following up on yesterday's query on Simple Delivery and non compensated items with other carriers.

This is to confirm that eBay provides full protection/compensation for any item that is listed as Simple Delivery, once the label is used and the item is in the carrier network. eBay protection/compensation overrides what the carriers will compensate.

Thank you,

Kat

Excellent news! Thank you so much kat@ebay

@lucy_farmer   I think you're right about the gamble of attracting new users.  Did I see somewhere recently that ebay are thinking about some joint project with FB?  I imagine if that happens they'll get eaten alive at the  negotiating table.

They have partnered with Facebook in the US but nothing in the UK yet.

Interesting.  What does "partnering" mean in this context?

Hmm, I should learn not to think aloud.  Answering questions like that is what search engines were invented for.  And the first hit I get is:

The indefatigable Liz called it back in January.  @valueaddedresource  to the rescue!

I chuckled and nodded near the end of the article:

"You would think the CEO of an ecommerce company that has had less active buyers than in 2018 for 10 consecutive quarters and is clearly struggling to retain their seller base too would understand the last thing in the world you should want is for your customers to spend even one minute on a competitor's site - but here we are."

The quote from unsuckEbay earlier in that same article also seems really on point to me, identical to my earlier "eaten alive" remark.

@johnwash1  they launched the Facebook partnership back in January/February in the US, Germany, and France, though a lot of sellers are not seeing any evidence of it when they search on Facebook (it seems these listings mostly appear on Facebook Marketplace when browsing through the app and may possibly be only on iOS).

I suspect the reason those locations were chosen was more Meta's decision than eBay's - the whole program was actually conceived by Meta in response to antitrust judgements and/or pending trials in the EU and US wherein the idea of opening up access for other marketplaces to use Facebook Marketplace was considered to be one way to address anticompetitive concerns.

There's really nothing for eBay to negotiate, even if they had leverage to do so, which they really don't. This is 100% Meta's playground, eBay's just happy they got invited to the party early, but now Meta has opened it up to several other marketplaces in Europe as well and Poshmark is jumping on board in the US too.

edit to add: obviously I should have read your most recent post before posting. 😂

Also, thanks for the reminder - I had forgotten to add another update about the very concerning and misleading AI summaries sellers noticed when they *did* finally start seeing their eBay listings showing on Facebook, but that has now been added as well.

Simple Delivery compensation for items not covered by the carriers

"I switched to it before I was forced into it, gradually, slowly, learning on the way."

I admire your tenacity.  Gotta wonder though why something called *Simple* Delivery requires such a cautious and lengthy learning curve.  And aren't we all still learning - months after it was launched - about this infuriatingly and patronisingly named *Simple* Delivery.  As name disasters go, it's got to be at least on a par with the Post Office Group changing its name to Consignia - but at least the new Chairman saw the error of his predecessor's ways and changed it back.  Wonder how long we'll have to wait till the same happens here?

I always try out eBay 'improvemnets' cautiously! I musty admit, I usually hate the changes on principle because I don't like change, and never think it will work. OH is always accusing me of being negative, but I think I just like to be aware of worst case scenario!

However, I must admit, I do find it pretty 'simple' now. One of the things I like best is that if I have used eBay's 'recommended' option for say a Large Letter, but by the time I have added extra packaging it becomes a parcel, I don't have to fork out extra to send it! I'm always adding an extra layer of bubblewrap/corrugated card and finding the parcels is larger/heavier than I thought it would be.
