Sending vinyl - simple delivery

Hello,

I am wanting to sell a rare vinyl worth probably in the hundreds. I would like to try avoid the hassle of simple delivery, so am I right in thinking if I use custom postage as opposed to simple delivery I can choose the courier (Royal Mail by 1pm) and offer free postage to the buyer? Can the buyer change this to any other courier (I have disabled evri in my website settings but I’m using the app to list and can’t see how to make sure it is disabled there)? And would I be able to input the tracking number anywhere so I’m paid out when the item is tracked as delivered? Obviously assuming the buyer is happy, (I’m 100% honest and describe very carefully so don’t see that this will be an issue, never ever had a problem before). Sorry for all the questions, I imagine I will have more once the vinyl has hopefully sold. Thanks very much ❤️ x

If you managed to use Custom Postage you will have control over how you send the item, add tracking and mark as dispatched.   However, ebay are changing live listings over to Simple Delivery so you'd have no guarantee yours would remain with custom post.   Evri should remain removed from your account, regardless of the device you did it on.   But again ebay say they reserve the right to change courier in some circumstances.    It's a risk.  I would probably leave it for now and wait for the dust to settle.

Hello, thankyou for your reply! Ah ok, sounds like I could get caught in the middle then and end up in trouble. I may have to reconsider selling on eBay and look elsewhere. Thankyou again, much appreciated x

As peaseblossom says!

And please be aware of the 'Exclusion List' problem.

Exclusion lists are those items which couriers will carry, (i.e. Not the prohibited list which they won't carry at all)  but refuse to pay out any compensation for loss or damage in the post.

Vinyl is on Evri's  exclusion list and also the RM exclusion list for normal postage.

And if you're posting anything worth 'probably in the hundreds' you need R.M special delivery. (that should cover mostly anything up to £2500.00)

Special Delivery is not offered under the Simple Del. system.

Apparently (but I cannot say for definite- the communication has been abysmal!) things on the carriers exclusion lists are also excluded from S.D. (and consequently the compensation benefits of S.D.)

So, as pease says, don't risk posting it until you're sure you can send it insured.

Hanging on until everything settles down is probably good advice.

If you are forced onto SD, you could list the item with "free postage". eBay then charge you for the shipping, and will refund you in about 30 days if their label isn't used. If you don't use their label, you can send the package however you wish. You may need to advise the buyer of tracking details manually, as eBay will automatically add their own tracking details, and it may not be possible to amend that (we don't know for sure yet) and you won't have the minimal extra cover which SD offers, and you may need to wait 14 days for your funds to be released.

If you do want to auction it, eBay is still the best purely online venue. Discogs would be OK if you're happy to stick it on at a fixed price and wait for it to sell, eventually. Some of the B&M auction houses are getting pretty good at selling rare vinyl. Their commission is a little higher, but they often get better prices. Omega in Warrington are particularly good, efficient and friendly (I have no involvement with them or any of their staff).

Hello to all, thankyou so much for your replies!

Lucy_Farmer - Thankyou for echoing what peaseblossom said, it seems I may be asking for trouble! I’ve looked into exclusion lists a little which is what worried me, then helped me decide to send RM special delivery by 1pm. Good to know I was thinking along the right lines, thankyou.

Vinylscot - thankyou also for your advice, that sounds like a good plan if I can’t sell it elsewhere, given that the three of you now have echoed the same sentiment I’ll not list it on eBay as yet and try elsewhere. Thankyou for your suggestions re places to sell, it’s very helpful!

Maybe try some cheaper records listed with SD to try to get the hang of it, you can still offer free postage with it. I don't think there's an option for special delivery with it though.

Have you tried Discogs? That's where I sell all my vinyl.

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.

Hmmm wonder where that bit now fits if ebay can change things at will ?

Omega specialise in selling vinyl records and there are a number of other specialist auction houses for vinyl.  I'm currently researching auction houses in my area and will probably end up using at least two different ones depending on the items I want to put into an auction.   If you want my template of things to consider when choosing an auction house, feel free to message me.

Hello, thankyou for your reply and your advice, much appreciated! I think I’ll leave actual auction houses till I run out of options but thankyou for your offer of your template, its very kind of you ❤️ if I do go the auction house route I’ll probably get back to you for that if that would be ok? Thankyou again.

Thankyou for your reply, that’s a good idea, like you say to get a feel for things. I’ll probably try that before I get to listing the expensive one. Thankyou!

I have an account with discogs and for the first time a few months ago decided to sell on there. I listed about 50 records, in the first 3 weeks I had 4 phishing attempts to my account. I then unlisted everything as it seems it is massively not secure and sadly a place for scammers. Shame as i sell virtually everything at a set price and it would have been ideal.

A Record dealer friend I know was lucky enough recently to pick up the [Taylor Swift - 1989 US 2 × Vinyl, LP, Album, Record Store Day, Limited Edition, Numbered, Reissue, Pink Transparent [Crystal Clear & Pink]  for the 'Bargain' price of £700 - and I say this, as it sells for a 'Minimum' of a £1000 today, and is extremely desirable. The Medium price on Discogs is £1003.12 - and the Highest was £1875.00 of what that DBL LP has sold for as recent as April 2025 - and on Ebay, (when clicking on Sold listings) have sold between £1215.40 to £2160.70.

So, what do all these Sellers, as well as Yourself and 'All' Vinyl sellers have in common ? - Well, it's VERY obvious. When posting records of such high value, we want the BEST service Royal Mail can offer, as Evri offers 'Diddly-Squat' - since Vinyl Records is on their Compensation Exemption list (among far too many other types of items which they won't even pay a single penny on)

So, when I post items of Higher value to buyers in The UK. I always have used 'Royal Mail Special Delivery', which is what my Record Dealer Friend used when he sold that Taylor Swift LP and made 'Double' the amount of money than the £700 he originally paid for it. He had complete peace of mind when Royal Mail Special Delivery offers up to £2,500 in Compensation, for any Loss, Stolen or Damage.

So, for 30 years since Ebay was first founded. Ebay has given the 'Freedom' for Any Ebay Private seller to post items sold through Ebay by Special Delivery and 'All' other options, until the dreaded April 2025 arrived !!!!

So, now an Ebay seller such as yourself, is naturally VERY concerned, because Ebay has replaced a 'Workable' system - which has worked well since Ebay first began - to a now 'Dodgy' system - which is Not-So-Simple-Delivery - which has now left you VERY worried, as if it does get Lost, Stolen or Damaged - then will you be able to recoup the amount in which the Vinyl Record sold for. Maybe 'Yes',  Maybe 'No' ??

Believe you me. Nobody should be placed in this position of uncertainty. Especially with a company as big as Ebay certainly is who NEVER should have removed Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Oh by the way. My Record Dealer Friend did NOT sell the Taylor Swift LP on Ebay. And the Only reason for this, is because of the Same reason why you created this post in the first place, as just like yourself, he did not wish to 'Risk' it now Simple Delivery became Mandatory, and when word Swiftly travels around concerning this recent uncertainty. Many Many other Record Dealers (and others) will take their expensive items off Ebay, and yes indeed shall run like hell to sites like Discogs and many others, who don't do such stupid mistakes as Ebay has sadly done, by enforcing this Not-So-Simple Delivery upon us all - with 'No' other option available.

You know it's funny actually, how so many people in this Ebay Community and Reddit and Youtube have mentioned that Ebay UK has chosen to go down the same route as Vinted has. Well, let me tell you all something. Ebay should Never had copied Vinted. It should have proved themselves as 'Better' than Vinted, but sadly they massively 'Failed' in that department. As these Problems being highlighted by so many people about Mandatory Simple Delivery simple keep piling up

My advice to you, is to either speak to Ebay Customer Services over the phone - for 100% reassurance, or, place your rare and expensive Vinyl Record on a site where you can post it using Royal Mail Special Delivery with 100% Peace of Mind that you are fully financially covered, if anything was to go wrong.

Oh, and another thing to consider. Simple Delivery offers both Evri and Royal Mail Postage Options. But does Ebay make a great deal of effort informing it's Sellers as to what is on Evri's Compensation Exemption list ?? - Does Ebay make a great deal of effort advising it's sellers to change your postage to just Royal Mail, because Evri is really a worthless piece of **** postal site ?? - Well, not from what I have seen. It's a total travesty, and I think Scamming Buyers are going to exploit Ebay's lackluster approach to this to it's fullest potential.
