For the purpose of tracking how do I send two items together which were sold separately?

Combining postage isn't working with Simple Delivery at the moment ( I can see you had SD on your listings). You can either send each item separately, or cancel/refund the transactions with buyer agreement and relist with the items all on one listing with one postage for the buyer to buy and pay again.

Personally i sold 2 items to one buyer and 2 items to another. I printed one label for each person, packed 2 items in one parcel added the same tracking number to both items. Royal Mail delivered my tracked 48 parcels in 2 days and full payment was received payment a couple of days later. Told buyers once you receive the parcel either leave feedback or just let me know and i would refund one of the postage amounts. Feedback was received and postage was refunded. No issues at all.

At last, someone confirming that one tracking number can be successfully added to 2 separate items purchased but posted together, and payment received for both in days.
It seems we learn more about SD from peeps' experiences, than eBay's ' informative' announcements !
Good to know and to pass onto others! 😊

If you were able to refund the postage then surely this wasn't Simple Delivery? Under SD the buyer pays the postage directly to ebay and they might get a refund eventually if the label is unused. The seller cannot refund the SD postage unless they want to refund the same amount from their item price at their own cost? It sounds like you were selling under the old system where the seller is paid for the postage and is therefore able to refund any duplication or excess.

It's almost certain @jefftopman is not referring to items which were sold with SD. Under the "old" system, it was always possible to send multiple items in one packaging, and add the same tracking details to all of them. It was also "simple" to either offer a combined shipping price, or to refund any overpayments.
At the moment, there isn't a properly thought out method for dealing with combined postage in SD. It crops up on the weekly chat every time, and the answer is always the same - they're working on it, but have no clue when it will be ready.
Sellers can't refund SD postage, as they never receive it in the first place.

If they could get combined buyer tax and SD working it would be game changer and would actually give a positive reason for SD to exist and take the sting off the buyer tax. As a buyer I love creating bundles (and getting bundle discounts) at the other place - it's great to know exactly how much you will be charged for a combined order without having to get into messages with the seller or commit to buy and wait for an invoice.

If I send both items together on one tracking label what is to stop the buyer claiming that they didn't receive one of them?

Nothing - if you are unable to change the tracking reference on the one where you didn't use the label you could be forced to give a refund.
Ebay's systems are not designed to be subverted they just expect everyone to put up with them profiting from the waste they create - it's astonishing they have no regard for other people's money.

Yes it wasn't SD it was customised. I only deal with Royal Mail and i refuse to use SD to let a buyer chose a shoddy delivery company to possibly save themselves a few pence , putting my item at risk. SD sucks. I see no benefit to the seller to consider using SD.

Nothing stopping that. It's just another risk to add to the list when you are selling on eBay.
