Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

So i am a private seller currently selling off lots of items for my mother who has been hoarding for years and i have some questions

So i have around 800 listing up atm all are buy it now or best offer

When the new rule comes in will any of the 800 be counted in the 300 free listings?

Reason i ask is the 1000 listings up until now stayed at 1000 when unsold items rotated every 30 days from the 800 items i already had up

Also with the new 300 limit if i list 300 new items after the 1st October as buy it now or best offer and they do not sell in the 30 days are they taken off the allowance in November when they renew?

No, it's definitely the intention. Free to sell for Private sellers (ad infinitum) which will be followed up early next year with charges to buyers in the form of a buying fee....!

None of it makes sense, it smells of desperation to try to compete with Vinted to win sellers and hopefully buyers back to eBay, but of course has alienated genuine business sellers.

Re: Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

Vinted are due to launch Vinted Pro for business selkers in the UK shortly.  In other countries where Vinted Pro has already launched there are no fees for sellers so, if the same is true for the UK, it will be interesting to see how eBay respond.

Vinted Pro was released in the UK 6 days ago.

My understanding is that the 35p is a fee and is payable whether or not the item sells.

And no FVF payable.

Yes, it'll be exploited just as everything else has always been in the past because of eBay's inaction.

I don't use Vinted. Is Vinted Pro still a free service in the UK?

Yes, entirely free, at the moment anyway.

Re: Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

Just before this becomes its own side topic

If someone obtains your date of birth, national insurance number, name, and address in the UK, they can potentially engage in various forms of identity theft or fraud, including:

  1. Identity Theft: They could impersonate you to access financial accounts, apply for loans, or commit fraud in your name.
  2. Opening Accounts: They might open bank accounts, credit cards, or utility accounts using your personal information.
  3. Government Services: They could potentially access government benefits or services that require identification.
  4. Phishing and Scams: They may use your information to create convincing phishing scams, targeting you or others to gain further personal information or money.
  5. Online Accounts: They could attempt to reset passwords on your online accounts, especially if they can guess security questions based on your personal information.

To protect yourself, consider the following actions:

  • Monitor Financial Accounts: Regularly check bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions.
  • Credit Report Checks: Obtain your credit reports from agencies like Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion to check for any unusual activity.
  • Fraud Alerts: Consider placing a fraud alert on your credit file, which can make it harder for someone to open accounts in your name.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you notice any suspicious activity, report it to your bank and relevant authorities immediately.

Always be cautious about sharing personal information, and consider using strong, unique passwords for your online accounts.

Re: Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

you wait just till jan 2025 when they make all private sellers who make over £1000 worth of sales take up business status or leave ebay forthwith . An ultimatum inline with amazon. I have it on good authority that its happening.

Re: Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

i think this may be in reference to the thirty items sold and limit of £1000.00 per annum before you need to declare this on your self assessment form. all online selling platforms have to inform hmrc of this.

That is such a mangle of the reporting rules and tax law that I am not even going to bother to unravel it, suffice to say you are wrong.

Re: Private seller changes starting October 1st questions

the £1000.00 per annum has always been the case, it's just that hmrc have stated they are actively enforcing this ruling. anyone selling more than £1000 a year or more than 30 items a year will be reported to hmrc by the online selling platform. i know this to be true, have checked with hmrc.

The £1,000 is a Trading Allowance for small business sellers. If a business seller has sales over £1,000 they need to complete a tax return.

A private seller may have sales over £1,000 and is not required to complete a tax return.

eBay will be reporting sales of over 30 items or £1,740 (figure may change due to inflation, it's 2000 Euros).

This eBay guidance page explains what's being reported and when:

Where have HMRC said they are actively enforcing the £1,000 trading allowance?
