New Scam

I received this message, via Ebay messaging' purporting to be from the seller team (it's from an Ebay account, not support). It is clearly a scam attempt. Unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any mechanism to report it directly.

I've starred out the buyer id and link in the message.

''Hello, You are being contacted by the eBay Support Team. We’re pleased to inform you that your item has been purchased by user *******. However, unusual activity has been detected on your account. To finalize the sale and receive your payment, you are required to complete a quick verification process. A dedicated link has been provided below for your convenience. Link: ********************'' Please note that until the verification is complete, your item will not be available for purchase by other buyers. Thank you for your understanding. We are always here to assist you. Best regards, © 2025 eBay, Inc.''

Re: New Scam

"How can this pass ebay security?!"

Because Ebay are probably on a kick-back from the scammer!

Re: New Scam

I cannot believe that! I have done hundreds of buys and sells on ebay and I do not believe they could have been on a kick-back from the scammer...

"I cannot believe that!"

Good for you!  I was only playing but given Ebay's track record of greed, nothing would ever surprise me.

Re: New Scam

Hope you are not right for the sake of all of us who buy and sell on ebay! I always trust ebay as a secure platform to do business and hope to continue in the future... but really they have to check out how can this kind of messages appear sent by them on the message mail...

Re: New Scam

There are at least two different scam sources.

One would be a type of phishing,  where people without ebay accounts just email loads of people in the hope that one has an ebay account and will fall for it.

The other seems to be this type where someone opens an ebay account so that they can use ebay messages to contact you.  You have to be extra vigilant with this type.

Re: New Scam

I just got scammed , hock line and sinker .

Had a valuable item on my e bay account , received a very good offer for my item .

This was when ebay had just altered the posting and money release .

My scammer had only  a couple of purchases in Germany , I sent a message declining his offer .

He then made another offer from USA , I messaged him that I would not post to a mailing box .

He still wanted to purchase and I could post to London to his work place . He was a medic in the USA airforce and provided proof of identity . Of course I thought this a scam

Few days later received E mail from Ebay .@gmail.com  with information that buyer had deposited money within ebay and Pay pal account and I was to post to London with proof of posting and send up to ebay .

I questioned why correspondence did not go through my ebay account .

Of received email from paypal that money was ready for release once item was received .

Yes I posted and sent proof of posting , heard nothing and ask where my money was . Buyer had not confirmed receiving item . Contacted buyer who contacted ebay&pay pal  .

Received email from ebay ,money in holding account for another 10 days , problem within pay pal a glich in the system .

Waited 10 days and contacted paypal for money , pay pal  can`t pay because buyer had paid twice on hois card , they then ask me to pay back money to ebay and get a receipt and the they would release my money .

I have been a stupid idiot from day one ,my greed got the better of me and  still thought  my money would eventually turn up .

Scammers used e bays and pay pals  literature and letter heads and similar e mails .

We all make mistakes but this one was very expensive to me .
