AS OF 15TH APRIL MY DAYS AS A PRIVATE EBAY SELLER WILL STOP AFTER 19 YEARS.
I AM FED UP OF THE GREED OF EBAY AND I HOPE OTHER EBAY SELLERS DECIDE TO NO LONGER LET THE EBAY CONTROL FREAKS HAVE THIS MUCH CONTROL OVER PRIVATE SELLERS.

Me too because when I took the parcel to the shop (for Yodel) yesterday they refused to accept it because it was too long yet it wasn't even a metre. I couldn't ring the courier to see if they'd pick it up because the buyer paid Simple Delivery. I had to ask a buyer to cancel. I was unfamiliar with Yodels max sizes. I know other couriers go by max volume but I couldn't tell with SD.
Even as a buyer I was looking for a memory card secondhand but I don't want to pay £2.70 postage for such a small item.
And I only had 3 orders in the last month including this cancelled one. just 3 years ago I got 20+ orders a month but that was long before this & other ebay debacles.

yes, for regular sized items it's fine & even easier because you don't have to copy & paste the address to the postage site but for long or large items it simply doesn't work

These are problems private sellers shouldn't have it's simply ridiculous

I thought of ignoring SD but found that as well

For combined ordera ebay urgently need to implement:
(1) a facility for the buyer to request an invoice before paying (maybe "committimg to buy" as before to stop anyone else buying) where the seller confirms the combined size/weight and
2) a facility for the seller to combine orders already placed separately again by confirming size/weight so the buyer gets the correct refund from ebay. Such refund should be nearly instant.
Both of these could result in a SD label of the correct price, size and weight.
The existing crude and unfair method of just bumping a combined order to the next rate should be withdrawn.
Ideally these facilities would cater for if the orders cannot be combined efficiently due to max size/weight restrictions by the carriers.
Also as an aside there should be (3) a facility for the seller to correct an insufficient label and pay the difference for example if they need a bulky label.

Private Sellers can have a Shop front on eBay. But to discuss this more, head over to this thread

What a stupid mess SD is!
I sold 5 programmes to the same person, all listed with my Custom Postage. On sale, ONE was changed to Simple Delivery - why?
Just listing a cassette, I find some have changed to SD, some have stayed with my chosen Custom Postage.
Same with other categories. Similar items, different treatment.
I have a stock of many stamps to use, so SD is no use to me. If sales are changed to SD, I will have to cancel them as Not As Listed, because I listed them with my own choice of delivery.
Not at all happy with ebay!

goo0d idea why can't people at ebay think creatively like that?

When devising SD it's clear that they put implementing ebay's needs way ahead of the user needs.
Combined SD postage can be fixed at no ongoing cost to ebay if they implement the required functions.

I relisted badminton rackets where the buyer had to cancel because the SD postage was wrong which I didn't know until I took the parcel to the shop who refused to take it. You probably read my earlier post Well guess what ebay only put my item to bulky parcels up to 30kg & £12.97 OMG it's way too much because the parcel weighs less than 1kg. No-one gonna pay that. I'm take the item down its diabolical that ebay are too stupid to let you put the weight in yourself

SD really needs to be made more user friendly.
As a ex private seller because of SD if it is not going to be made optional then it needs to have opt outs made available for certain categories that are sensible and helpful for many private sellers because of their circumstances.
This could lead to a lot of private sellers listing items again.

Simple Delivery really needs to be made optional again via an option in or opt out.
The amount of hoops I've had to go through to try and avoid it going to SD, is insane.
Maybe I don't want to use SD, because... it's far cheaper and easier for me to use InPost !! £5.99 for a large parcel (61x38x41?) and any weight up to 15kg, beats Simple Delivery hands down !!

I agree with you and try and list items exempt from SD like Jewellery. I must say RM are being a pain at the minute too......taking 5 days plus to deliver 1st class RD 😞 Just had a buyer who didnt believe me that i posted quickly (tracking number provided) and their item was temporarily stuck with RM grrrrr

On the other hand....
I have recently been very, and happily, suprised by R.M. delivering a (tiny, letter-box sized) parcel on a Sunday morning!
Perhaps R.M. have been concious of being slow/missing deliveries, so they're putting in a bit of overtime to catch up...... I'm quite impressed 😀

I just don't get ebays thought process.
Nearly everyone in the forums knows SD is just something introduced as a money grab and is not for the benefit of private sellers.
A really good compromise by ebay as a start point would be to let private sellers selling things by LL that are under 250g and under £20 have a opt out.
I would definitely start selling again.
Plus, I do think RM do not provide the level of service that they do for items posted using RM Labels that are brought directly.
22-09-2025 10:04 AM
I agree.
When using RM personally and directly they have been on point regarding things received and delivered.
It seems that they definitely take more care when people use them directly.

Yes I think there is a path to getting acceptance of SD while still broadly achieving the commercial objectives that ebay but it's just that ebay haven't applied themselves to making the required policy (eg 100g and 250g LL across all categories) and functionality eg combined postage (not the current fudge of bumping up a grade), dealing with unusable labels (eg medium labels for bulky items), and dealing with bulky items where the seller needs to drop off.

I agree with what you posted.
Ebay wouldn't be losing out to much by having a opt out for items that are 250g and under, LL, and under £20 in value, across all categories.
They need to make combined postage a system that actually works easier.
For larger or more valuable items then I can understand SD becoming more accepted even if not very popular.
Considering all the changes being constantly made to SD a good solid start point that isn't changed so often could, like you said, lead to it becoming more widely accepted, and ebays aims would still remain.
