Mistaken listing

I made a mistake on listing an item which I forgot to add a minimum price which should be £20 , it now has a £1 bid on it and it won't let me cancel the listing , what can I do ?

Check out the section entitled 'When you can end a listing' from the link below:

You will need to cancel the bid first and then you should be able to end or edit the listing.  Make sure you let the bidder know why you have cancelled their bid.

Re: Mistaken listing

Have Ebay now dropped the "defect" thing when a seller cancels an item with bids on ?.

Re: Mistaken listing

A transaction defect is now only received when cancelling an order (seller initiated) or if a case closes without seller resolution.

Cancelling a bid or ending a listing won't result in a defect but a private seller may be charged 5% of the highest bid and doing so on a regular basis could result in restrictions.

Re: Mistaken listing

I think since selling fees were removed for private sellers, they stopped the 'fine' for ending a listing with bids.

Unless they've changed the rules, (  they may who knows! ),  if you cancel a bid you cannot then edit the listing.  It would have to be ended,  but having a bid a fee is charged on the highest bid placed,  because a buyer has been disappointed with the auction ending early.  Otherwise,  sellers could then cancel bids, and up the price if they see the item is not reaching what they wished for.

@178tadworth   Please do come back if you do cancel that bid and confirm if you can then edit your listing, it will help us to help others with the same issue,  thank you.

Re: Mistaken listing

I found a way to cancel the listing and relist the item. Thanks for your help.

Re: Mistaken listing

You could / can,  always cancel an auction if it has more than 12 hours to run and relist,  but if it has bids you will pay a seller fee based on the highest bid placed for ending the auction early,  as eBay do not like to see their buyers disappointed.

Re: Mistaken listing

A seller can't cancel a bid and edit a listing, but if there's only one buyer and they ask them to retract their bid then the seller can make edits. If there's more than one buyer then the seller would need to persuade them all to retract their bids. Any revisions would be subject to what sellers can and can't do within/outside the final 12 hours.

Bids don't need to be cancelled before ending a listing, if a seller just clicks on the 'end listing' button and then selects a reason that'll end it.

Private sellers no longer pay a fee for ending a listing with bids early, but would be monitored so they don't make a habit of it.

Wow ,  never saw that announced and surely it makes a mockery of bidding , waiting for a 10 day auction to end,  only to find because seller isn't receiving the price they want , they can end the auction,  and no penalty fee paid.  Me thinks those bidders will never return to eBay to bid again on auctions.

Wonder what eBay deem ' making a habit' of ending auctions, before action is taken, and what would that action be.

A seller cancelling with no penalty one time would most definitely do it again if the price is not to their liking.

Re: Mistaken listing

The help page on 'Ending a listing' still states that sellers may be charged a fee if the listing has bids and that doing so on a regular basis may lead to limitations/restrictions.

There MAY be a fee charged which then means probably,  and that would make more sense.

It always used to be you were charged , I just cannot see the benefit  for not charging a fee, as said , it then wouldn't stop a seller doing it again , and then perhaps getting a few days ban ?

The guidance page hasn't been updated, remember the Reserve page that stayed the same for 12 years!

Re: Mistaken listing

A seller can cancel a bid and then edit the listing subject to the allowed revisions, they don't need to ask the buyer to retract the bid.

Either way, the auction start price can only be reduced not increased so the listing would need to be ended anyway.

There isn't anything in writing, all you can do is set up a test listing and try it same as I did, obviously you'll need another person to bid.

I know the help pages aren't always up to date but I think the one on 'Ending a listing'  must have been updated fairly recently as it quotes different fees for private sellers versus business sellers:

Private sellers - 5% of highest bid up to a maximum of £20;

Business sellers - Final Value Fee based on highest bid.

Ah, that wasn't there last time I looked and messed about with a test listing.
