Sold a large item and had to use ebay simple delivery. The purchase had gone through and the delivery was calculated. 2.75 was charged to the buyer. On looking at the information the parcel covered a medium parcel when the actual package was a large parcel. I enquired about this before even using the label and ebay said there is an agreement in place to which the post office will take it. I tried and they denied the parcel and told me to use parcel force.
So i then had to spend out of pocket 10.80 for the actual package label, to which i wasn't able to be refunded. I was given the 2.75 and told get on ur bike. No way of resolving by sending an additonal charge to the buyer. The simple delivery is just a scam and is awful to use. There needs to be a change.

It's quite clearly stated that Simple Delivery labels are only valid up to the maximum size and weight of the chosen service. For Royal Mail that's 66cm x 41cm x 38cm. Royal Mail don't even have a "Large Parcel" size; just Small and Medium.
What you should have done was not list it using Royal Mail, assuming it isn't too big/heavy for Evri as well.

If you go here: https://www.ebay.co.uk/ship/prf/simpledelivery you can choose who to use. NOW large items like yours should go via DHL but that may have not been an option when you listed your item.
The normal advise is to just accept e-Bay's Recommended size/weight as if it's too low they'll still honour it but not if it's so big/heavy that the carrier (Royal Mail in your case) won't handle it. You need to change the parcel size to "Bulky Parcel."

There isn't an option to change it, but some items for example those oversize over 20kg are exempt from Simple Delivery and Custom Postage can be used.
Simplicity of the above aside, there is currently an issue that Simple Delivery not offering Custom Postage to oversize items, lightweight items and those under £10, these are all exempt from Simple Delivery.
There is a workaround.
From the link below Go To Solution and follow the advice in Rick's answer to list your item.

The problem ebay have created is that it's requiring the seller to know the packed size/weight of the item when listing and not giving any reasonable way of remedying the the situation if they get it wrong to the extent that they need to use a different carrier such as the crossover from medium to bulky parcels.
In the past if the seller estimated the postage cost wrong on the item listing it was on them and they would just have to pay more than they recovered from the buyer. Now they are getting stuck (if you pardon the pun) with a label that doesn't work and can usually only be refunded to the buyer.
Ebay should at least implement something that enables the seller to 'pay the difference' to get the right label that they need.
It's frankly offensive to logic that they had the nerve to call this mess 'simple'.

An expected Small Parcel turning out to be a Medium or heavier than thought (by e-Bay) is no problem as they will still honour the price. On the old system we'd have to roughly pack an item before we even listed it to get the size and weight — which could prove an utter waste of time if it doesn't sell — and make a final check before sending it. If it was near to a weight-limit we'd have to cross our fingers that our scales were accurate. I find it far simpler to just grab a box and stick the sold item in without having to think about how big/heavy it is. It's also simpler to get the label or arrange an RM collection with just a few clicks rather than having to enter the Buyer's details into a different web-site with the risk of errors in doing so.
It's gets sticky when something unexpectedly becomes too big/heavy for the chosen courier to handle. As you say there should be a better way of dealing with such a situation than cancelling the sale and explaining why to the Buyer and then re-listing it with revised carriage. It must be particularly problematic for Sellers with both RM and Evri selected due to their different size limits.

Items over 20Kg are no longer exempt from Simple Delivery now that DHL has been added for larger items. They need to be over 30Kg to be exempt now.

But if you do that then your listing might have a high postage rate that causes it not to sell at a fair price or reasonable timescales. Under both systems it's in the seller's interests to ensure the postage is set correctly when listing. Unless the seller is hoping to take advantage of SD suggesting a too low rate to make their listing more attractive.
My point is that under the new SD system the seller is stuck if they have got it wrong an end up with the buyer purchasing a label that cannot be used. The seller should be allowed to pay the difference for their mistake and ebay should then provide a correct label.
It's also simpler to get the label or arrange an RM collection with just a few clicks rather than having to enter the Buyer's details into a different web-site with the risk of errors in doing so.
Under the old system I would just buy my label from ebay and all the buyers details were populated anyway (although sometimes ebay made me correct the address - even though they had plenty of opportunity to sort that out with the buyer in advance of me buying the label).
I never organised collections so cannot comment if that's simpler or harder now.

I just feel like if i had the option to put the dimensions and weight in and put the postage as what i would like this would have been 10x easier and i would be out of pocket. Charge the buyer and job done.

The thing to do here is take the parcel to Royal Mail’s delivery office or find a Collect+ nearby. I would say book a home collection but the postie may not be happy, that would be my last resort. I know it isn’t ideal but you’d have got the parcel sent with the original eBay label.

Aaah thank you for that, but I didn't realise that everyone is now seeing the DHL / Bulky parcel > 30kg option.
It's still not showing on my listing page, I've only the Medium parcel up to 20kg option . 😪
27-08-2025 2:18 PM
Large parcel: £10.80.
27-08-2025 3:20 PM
If you click on a bit you'll find that £10.80 is only for Large Parcels up to 750g; for up to 10kg it's £12.95 and it's a PARCEL FORCE not ROYAL MAIL service. It's interesting to see that they can be a foot longer than DHL but smaller overall. There seems to be a service for even bigger things so it's a shame we can't use that instead.
27-08-2025 3:38 PM
£10.80 is the Standard Tariff price for Large Parcels up to 5Kg, not 750g.
The Royal Mail Tracked service currently only goes up to Medium Parcel size. However, with the Royal Mail and Parcelforce networks now being integrated it is possible that larger sizes could be added to the Royal Mail Tracked service at some point.

Sorry, my mistake; with Simple Delivery I'm out of practice with the RM web-site. It did seem odd as there can't be many things that big that would weigh so little.
