Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

OK so listing some items tonight

good news first - even though Simple Delivery is now being pushed I can opt out to custom settings and select my standard shipping rates

bad news - I have to opt out of Simple Delivery every time I list even though I am listing similar items. Really?

This is from ebay itself:  You can opt out of Simple Delivery when you're creating your listing by selecting Custom Postage from the delivery options. If you'd prefer not to use Simple Delivery at all in the future, you'll need to opt out each time this programme is recommended when you're creating listings.

I mean what does that last sentence mean anyway?

Go to revise your listings and click on simple delivery, a custom postage option will pop up and it's free . I've just done it with 142 listings . Took me 6 hours but now all my listings are custom free postage

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Do you mean that you can select Royal Mail Tracked 48 or Evri without having the awful simple delivery imposed upon you? I don't have a printer or a smartphone and I'm dreading being bullied into simple delivery in a few days.

For several months the custom postage/advanced options meant that I could continue to hand write labels and post parcels at the post office using Tracked 48.  With this option sellers could choose simple delivery or posting items how they wanted to. Is this still possible please?

Sorry no it's not possible.   Simple Delivery is now mandatory for all Private sellers,  the opt out option has been removed.

Custom Postage should be available for exempt items,  that is those are lightweight under 100g , those oversize over 61cm in size and those under £10 in value.

However!  To date that has been a ' technical' issue and custom postage is not showing for those items, peeps are using ' Rick's workaround ',  link below,  to list those items.

Unless those items are exempt from Simple Delivery, lightweight / oversize or under £10 in value,  you cannot use a custom postage option.

Unless,  you have selected your own postage , avoiding SD this way,  you will not have tracking to show delivery and your payout will be held for a minimum of 14 days.  Which is  a shame because from the 6th August, when tracking does show delivery, then payouts are released within 24 hours.

Also, avoiding SD and using your own postage remember:

  • If you selected 'Buyer pays’ when you created the listing, your buyer will automatically be refunded for any Simple Delivery label that isn’t used after 30 days

  • If you selected ‘Seller pays’ and offered free postage on your listing, you'll need to fill out the Request a refund for Simple Delivery form for the label that wasn’t used. Make sure to send your request within 14 days of your item selling

I cannot see any items listed on this account, are you using another account to list those 142 listings?

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Thanks very much for your message. I thought it seemed too good to be true. I couldn't see what was wrong with letting sellers use 'simple delivery,' or continuing to use their preferred tracked delivery service with the custom/advanced options.

I'm worried about using Evri because of their appalling record with items lost, damaged or stolen. If I offer free postage and have both the trusted Royal Mail and the untrustworthy Evri as couriers can I choose to use my choice of courier, or will eBay select the courier please?

Do I need a smartphone and the eBay app please?

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I think you can opt out of one or the other in your settings. It’s fascinating though how people’s experiences differ. I have had a parcel arrive damaged, sent via Royal Mail. I put in a claim last March, had one response asking for more photos and nothing since. You have to use an App and tracking the claim is impossible. I’ve also had to cancel a label and it’s taken up to a month to get a refund. Evri however are easily contactable, reply quickly and a cancelled label was refunded within 14 days. Tracking is also better with Evri. Royal Mail rarely gives updates other than they’ve got your parcel and it’s been delivered.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I thought it was 24 hours from a buyer paying that we will now get paid, not on delivery confirmation ?

We’ve made some improvements to Buyer Protection to better support your sales. Starting today, we’re reducing the buyer fee to make your lower-priced items more appealing to buyers. From 6 Aug, you’ll also receive your funds within 24 hours of the buyer paying.

Get your funds faster

You’ve told us that it’s important to know you’ll be paid shortly after a buyer places an order, and we’ve listened. Starting from 6 Aug, you’ll receive your funds in your eBay balance within 24 hours of the buyer paying. This will automatically apply for orders completed after 6 Aug, so there’s nothing you need to do.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Hi not really sure - I only used to do my listing on the computer ( haven't put anything on since Simple delivery) When I tried to upload with Simple delivery it only gave me option of RM and Evri but at the much higher price. Refuse to use it!!
I only used to check if anything was sold on my phone.
Good luck with your problems. KMC

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Hi I believe the only option is Simple Delivery - at the much higher cost. When I tried to list sorting my own postage method it was only SD and that gave me the option of RM or Evri. I refuse to list anything until it stops. ( I get about 30 emails a day from unhappy people!!).
Vinted for me .

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

I have just checked a draft I have waiting on eBay. 'It has updated it for me' . Only option is Simple Delivery. I refuse to use it until it stops - hoped others would too. I'm not going to make everything free postage - they win and won't change. Vinted for me until they see sense!! KMC

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

Simple delivery is cheaper.

Looking at two of your listings, this one has now got Simple Delivery as the postage method.  Vintage Ladies Roman Originals blouse- size 16. light green

Tracked postage using SD shows to the buyer as 2.94.  Click and Collect is only £2.26 - a bargain.

The next item, Gents Morley short sleeved shirt, L light blue, has RM second class postage (an inferior service) for £3.80.

I do understand why some sellers might not like SD, but it does provide a cheaper service for your buyer and more protection for you.  If the item is not selivered or is damaged in transit, Ebay handle the case opened by the buyer and refund them.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

This isn't just about cost, it's also about seller flexibility and choice. I don't want to have to drop off parcels at random places miles away. I don't want to use providers like Evry who are unreliable (so many of my packages have been lost and damaged through them). Ebay is supposed to be a platform for buyers and sellers. There is no reason I should be forced to use a logistics company that doesn't fit my needs as a seller, or delivers a sub-par experience for my buyers (where I then need to expend extra time, cost and effort to remedy issues). I have removed all my sales listing from ebay, and as you can see from the hundreds on comments on this many other sellers feel the same (which also then impacts buyers as fewer sellers will sell through the platform). A clear instance where ebay is prioritising its needs over the needs of its users.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

You seem to have misunderstood that all the delivery responsibility moves to eBay, and their contract with the delivery company (Evri/RM) and they handle and resolve buyer and delivery issues without impact to you.

This is the beauty of their economies of scale and having a consistent service across the platform, as so many private sellers' delivery efforts were so amateur.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

That is not the case. If something is damaged or doesn't arrive I then have to step in to the customer query. And having had a instance in my last sale where I had an issue and needed to contact eBay, was an almost impossible task to get hold of someone to talk to to resolve. EBay are not set up to be responsive in this way, and if packages go missing, that still lands on me (including through resolution time, complaints, and bad reviews). I never asked ebay to take this responsibility for me, and frankly based on my experience, I have not found them capable of delivering the quality of service that I believe anyone who buys from me should receive or gives me the mechanisms to solve issues effectively.

You can't be using simple delivery then.

Yes - even if eBay are 'handling the refunding' for missing/damaged items sent via Simple Delivery, there can be all sorts of issues with the claim that the seller has to deal with, ie if they believe the buyer is falsely claiming the item is damaged.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

If this is your only account, you have only ever sold 17 items, so it's difficult to see how Evri have lost 'so many' of your items.  No seller has ever been obliged to use Evri.

It looks as if you have only sold one item with Simple Delivery and you have no current listings.  Without wishing in any way to cause offence, you are hardly the voice of experience.

If you look properly at the terms and conditions of SD, you will see that you are not forced to use Evri, you can choose to only use Royal Mail and you will also see that there are advantages for buyers and sellers.

Of course, nobody has to sell on Ebay.  If you choose to, then you will have to use Simple Delivery.  Maybe you could come back in a few months with comments based on experience of using the service.

Re: Having to opt out of Simple Delivery on EVERY LISTING

You're right, I have sold 17 items, the last one was a week ago, and ebay was built on sellers and buyers like me (I've been an ebay user for 23 years). From those I've sold on ebay, evry lost 3 parcels (17% of my sales), and from a buyer perspective dozen of packages which have got lost, dumped on the curb to be stolen, left in the rain, not had instructions for delivery followed etc. (you can find thousands on posts online dedicated to how poor Evri delivery is).

So by all means try and belittle my experience. The problem for ebay is that whilst my experience on its own might not have any impact, as you can see in this thread I am not alone in my issue with this change. And the reality is that if I and others go away for a few months, we won't be coming back. You can feed that back in your ebay team.
