OK so listing some items tonight
good news first - even though Simple Delivery is now being pushed I can opt out to custom settings and select my standard shipping rates
bad news - I have to opt out of Simple Delivery every time I list even though I am listing similar items. Really?
This is from ebay itself: You can opt out of Simple Delivery when you're creating your listing by selecting Custom Postage from the delivery options. If you'd prefer not to use Simple Delivery at all in the future, you'll need to opt out each time this programme is recommended when you're creating listings.
I mean what does that last sentence mean anyway?

How to you cancel the old label and get a refund, if it’s the buyer who now buys it?

eBay are automatically handling all claims and covering the full sale price.

At the moment if a parcel needs more protective packaging and goes up a size or weight, I just buy a different postage option. This isn’t going to work. It will mean more damages as you won’t be able to use heavier boxes or packing, if you have to keep it under their specified weight. Plus I have to use what I have at the time. There is no money in the postage to pay for new boxes or bubble wrap.

I'm not sure that is how it works, if you accept the eBay guess for postage and they under specify the postage service, they cover the difference.
If you manually add weight and dimensions and *you* get it wrong, you pay the difference.

You can choose size and weight, but they have removed small parcel option(shoe box) so now all things that were a small parcel have to go medium parcel and are more expensive.

When I listed using sd on my listing it says free for buyers seller pays postage but in the edit it says buyer pays so which is it?

Royal Mail weigh every parcel before they accept it. If it’s too heavy or too large they will reject it.
EVRI drop off has no scales so they will accept it. Pretty sure EVRI add extra charges if you’re over.
This is being rolled out in record time, with very little information. It’s existing listings that worry me most. I never weigh anything before I list, just guess and if it’s over I take the hit and change the method I send it.
Some postcodes EVRI charge extra for. Will this be adjusted before or after the buyer purchases?

It is not quite as easy as that.
You still have to package up your item before listing. If you don't and the ebay label is wrong, you have to buy a whole new label but only from the courier, Ebay won't let you get a new one from them, and the courier will not accept the wrong one.
So you write off the cost of the old label, and then you have to change the tracking details on your listing's or Ebay won't release your funds.
All of which could be avoided if EBAY WOULD ALLOW SELLERS TO UPGRADE LABELS AFTER AN ITEM IS SOLD, WHICH IS WHEN MOST PEOPLE WILL FIRST THINK ABOUT PACKAGING IT.

Starting from 15 April, Simple Delivery will be the only delivery method available for private sellers when listing most items. This means a 'large letter' item costing £1.55 at the PO is now going to be charged at £2.74. This is extortionate from Ebay and I will be closing my account.

I Have just been on the phone to eBay, they have been getting a lot of questions regarding 'Simple' delivery.
I asked them why small packets and RM collection option at point of label printing as it is at the moment are not available..
Apparently the small parcel option is a technical issue and will be fixed in a couple of days.
Having a parcel collected by RM without having to go and request it yourself from RM website is also something that will be available in the Near Future, as will the option of other couriers.

You need to select "Seller Pays" for free postage.

Even worse for those selling things like postcards: now 85p, 2 weeks time: £2.70!

Sounds like the invoice "glitch" might take 90 days to fix, which was a deliberate deletion. I'm finished the debacle will only get worse

There are charges if you get weight or dimensions wrong, exorbitant charges.

Absolutely there are and the buyer will be charged these, great for feedback that one!

I've also noticed that if you opt out of one of the Simple Delivery couriers, you can potentially end-up being charged more for doing so, in effect penalising you (as the Seller) for not wanting to send your goods with eBay's preferred courier provider - EvriParcelNicked - and thus you pay more than you did a week or two ago!
