Has anyone actually been contacted by HMRC due to the changes last year?

Just wondering, since the changes in reporting last year, has anyone been contacted by HMRC or has eBay told anyone they have had their details sent on to HMRC?

Cheers

Yes.  A friend of mine just received a HMRC demand for items he has sold on Etsy.  He is spitting feathers.  It’s not a money amount that is upsetting him (works on rigs) but his daughters and wife not declaring sales etc using his account

I was contacted by HMRC in 2023 for ebay sales in 2021.  I would think it will take them a while as they only have so many agents.  All sellers info will be sent to HMRC if they have a turnover of more than 1k.  I would think they will target the higher turnover sellers first as it is worth more to them.

If it was a one-to-many letter that sounds correct. The tax year was April 6th 2021 to April 5th 2022 and the deadline to register for self-assessment online (if you needed to) would have been 31st January 2023. It would therefore have made no sense for HMRC to contact you before that date if the sales occurred during the 2021-2022 tax year.

The reporting thresholds - introduced last year - are unlikely to be used by HMRC for investigating individual eBay UK users who should be declaring their eBay income but are not. As your post shows HMRC already had access to UK users' eBay sales before the reporting thresholds were even introduced.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.
