Guernsey insurance number

I’m being asked for my national insurance number as I’ve sold over 30 items. I live in Guernsey and have a Guernsey insurance number, which is saying invalid. A Gsy insurance number is GY and 6 numbers. I was on the the phone to eBay yesterday for an hour trying to explain this and they ended up saying it must have a letter after the 6 numbers and that I’m wrong. My funds are on hold because of this. Can anyone help please? Thank you.

At first I thought you had (incorrectly) registered your eBay account as being in the United Kingdom but you haven't; you are correctly showing as being registered in Guernsey.

I suspect the issue you are having is eBay (and their CS reps) failing to understand that Guernsey is not part of the United Kingdom. In fact; I don't believe Guernsey even falls under the remit of the OECD's digital sales reporting rules as Guernsey is not an OECD member.

I really don't how how you're going to explain this to eBay, though.

Yes you are correct Guernsey does not have a final letter, jersey does but not Guernsey.

Individuals

The TIN is composed of 6 digits prefixed with GY (see note * below) e.g;

GYXXXXXX (where ‘X’ is a digit between 0-9 inclusive)

A UK NINO is made up of two letters, six numbers and a final letter, which is always
A,B,C or D e.g; QQ 12 34 56 A

Jersey Social Security Number

A Jersey Social Security Number is comprised of 6 digits prefixed by “JY” and a final
letter e.g; JY 123456 A

Your advisor was their English clear or was this an overseas advisor?

Best thing is to get a call back very first thing in the morning

Lines open between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays.

9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

I recommend contacting CS very first thing in the morning, when the lines first open, as there's more chance of Dublin answering.

I think the problem here is that the original post on this topic was from a different account. There were a number of sales and the account was registered in the UK.

The OP then opened this account which is correctly registered in Guernsey and repeated their original post.

Thank you for clarifying did you get through to Dublin by any chance?

Two of the three calls were from Dublin. I keep coming to a dead end where I’m told I must have it wrong. I don’t know what else I can do.

What country is shown in your registration address on this account? It is the last line of the address and will be either "United Kingdom" or "Guernsey".

I'm pretty sure the registration address would only state "United Kingdom" or "Guernsey" as those would have been the only options you could have selected from the menu during registration. The Channel Islands are part of the British Isles but they are not part of Great Britain which consists of England, Scotland and Wales.

For whatever reason eBay does not verify a user's registration address even though they could easily do this with Royal Mail's PAF file. When you created this account you gave eBay an incorrect country of registration - as you cannot change your country of registration I'm not sure there is a solution for you. The OECD's digital sales reporting rules mean you will be treated as an individual no matter how many eBay accounts you have which is why both accounts are affected.

I've just checked my own private account (registered in 2010) and this is how the registration address is displayed: 

So private accounts will show "GB" if the user selected that as their country when entering their registration address at some point in the past. It still isn't clear to me exactly what is shown in the same section of your account. Obviously don't post that information here unless you can obfuscate everything except the country line like I have above but there isn't a "Nationality" line.
