If you operate a Royal Mail Business Account and use RM48 /24 you waiver the right to any compensation whatsoever - so when RM delivered a parcel crushed with tyre marks right down the middle you get nothing - when the parcel is lost - you get nothing - when it is misdelivered - you get nothing - when the parcel is ripped to shreds and the contents misssing - you get nothing - When they lose a complete days post in sacks - you get nothing - at least EVRI offer some compensation !
Having delivered nearly 500,000 packages with RM we have a pretty good idea how good Royal Mail really are !
Here's what RM have to say !
'No loss or damage compensation is available for untracked contract services posted using a Royal Mail account (excluding VAT exempt 1st and 2nd class, VAT exempt Royal Mail Signed For®, International Standard and Economy posted on account*)
No compensation for consequential loss.'

"If cost is your main factor in packaging, maybe consider investing in a £12-£15 Enveloboxer or Boxer to make your own boxes. You quickly make back the money as buying new boxes or any new packaging is ridiculously expensive! plus you need to store them, instead of making one whenever you need it. You could even make a profit on postage! There are also loads of online print-for-FREE 'fold & tuck' templates to use/re-use cardboard you already own.
If none of this is able to help you in any way, maybe it'll help another seller who reads this, especially as regards saving money and/or time on wrapping/packaging."
Thanks for that. I'm slowly succeeding in decluttering my property, but instead the place is stacked with more and more cardboard boxes that I need for despatch! So this made me hopeful, and indeed may help some sellers. But the 'Boxer' only makes boxes up to 8", so not much use for me.
Meanwhile, seeing other recent postings in this thread, clearly I have a market for refurbished keyboards with working caps locks!

More on reducing packaging costs by making your own boxes.
For me the Enveloboxer and The Boxer were only the start. You can extrapolate, only if wished of course, as they're just scoring boards with measurement charts. They work on the obvious principle of the box base having slightly smaller dimensions so that the box lid fits over (and having a cheap £5 circle punch so you can make half-circles for people's fingers to lift the lid). People have been making such boxes forever, using only a ruler (I started in the 1970s), then the dedicated Enveloboxer and The Boxer came along. Such basic boxes can be made in under 2 minutes (under 60 seconds for a famous magic-fingers crafter, not me!), yet are expensive to buy or, another way of looking at it, they're an easy way to make much profit.
I personally no longer use the Enveloboxer or The Boxer as I either know the measurements, actually the proportions, by heart or I measure by eye only using an ordinary scoring board, which has two ends open so you can score card of any length/width. I usually max at A3 as larger becomes unwieldy on a standard-size board. (A3 is 297 x 420 mm / 11.69 x 16.54 inches.)
I've also used print-for-free online templates as you can scale up the measurements. Again, once I got the hang of it, templates no longer needed. A box (especially the sort that forms its own lid) is one of the most straightforward 3D items and anyone can make a box i.e. you don't need templates or even a ruler. A box doesn't need to be made neatly or symmetrically.
I've also used Craftelier's box-making guides, which are rigid plastic corners/T-shapes you slide/slot box sides into to hold them while you glue/tape, then remove the guides.
You can cut down larger boxes. Hubby and I bought a box-cutter (expensive) to re-size them, but soon got the hang of doing it by eye. He said it re-uses a box he'd otherwise have to break up anyway and recycle. A box-cutter merely has a ruler and a guide to help make a cut at the same level on all sides.
DIYing/re-sizing a box saves on ullage (spare space) and thus postage cost. Lots of ullage means spending time, effort and material on filling that space = higher postage. Saves on buying boxes, taking delivery, storing them.
But it's a good idea if you feel satisfaction or even enjoyment in box-making - it's tedious otherwise.
If I was a private seller on eBay, I expect my main concern would be that the time/effort/£cost of boxes/packaging was covered by the "postage" that's paid by buyers, but the problem is that "postage" is taken by buyers to mean the actual postage cost and not any extra to cover "and packing". That requires sellers to source AND PAY for their packaging materials without reimbursement, thus obliging sellers to factor it into the goods' price. A "large" commercial eBay seller can buy boxes/packaging at bulk discount. So to compete on prices, for a private seller it's an advantage to reduce packaging costs and thus reduce what has to be factored into the price, hence my original post giving hopefully a useful tip on reducing packaging costs.

Privatisation of the UK mail service by the Tories has been a disaster and the quality of all the competing services has gone down. If you want to continue selling online you just have to absorb all the losses. Why should eBay tell you which service to choose? EBay loves low prices and free postage and they don't lose any money unless you stop using eBay.
You seem to have been unusually unlucky. Have you read and followed eBay's advice on Selling Safely on eBay? Stuff like only using eBay messages to communicate, always using Tracked postage, don't post until payment has cleared, use clear photographs showing all angles of items, mentioning all faults, etc., etc.

Thanks, appreciated.

And also not helped by the postage advantage that Chinese sellers have under the Universal Postal Union Terminal Dues System. It's outdated and, in modern global e-commerce, unfair. It was set up 1873, amended 2019 but not enough to create a level playing field.
Under the System Chinese sellers benefit from subsidised international shipping rates, and thus very much lower shipping rates, when sending packages to other countries including Britain. Result: UK sellers struggle to compete with the artificially low shipping costs offered by Chinese competitors who can afford to undercut British sellers.
The new government and all countries disadvantaged by this System should take action to reform or abolish the System.

Your absolutely right. If it was legal I would shoot the driver.

I always use royal mail, its more expensive but more reliable.
I sent 2 parcels via Hermes and both got dropped and damaged.
So 100% fail for sending.
Out of 5 parcels I received one got lost and seller had to send again.
So 20% fail on receiving.

For me it's when things go wrong I rate the courier.
Thankfully RM rarely loses a parcel but when they do there has been no discussion just a cheque in the post. Only happened once in 2 years. When a RM van drove over our front garden (don't ask) no argument just a cheque in the post for new turf. Try that with Evri!
However, I have to say Packlink were surprisingly easy to deal with when it came to *lost* parcels, I guess they just can't argue and refunds were rapid. The one time I had 6 in a row go missing it was blatant theft by drivers / warehouse staff / van broken into etc...
Damage rarely occurs to RM parcels but was far too common with Evri / Hermes. And that's when they act like it isn't their problem.

It depends on area.
Some drivers keep the parcel and say its "lost"
I know it was happening in my area where i used to live.
Romanian driver just "lost" parcels.
Now im different area and not once have had issues.
Also when using tracked Evri postage it works as safety net

I agree with you absolutely, I’ve been trying to contact them regarding the way that they deliver my packages and parcels and it’s like talking to a brick wall.

Oh, they (belatedly) respond to civil claims. Just look at the thread on the Consumer Action Group (CAG) forums.

That section is not for 48/24 tracked - it is for ordinary post sent on business account
13-12-2024 10:30 AM
The absolute worse by far. I now only use DPD or RM.

A few days ago my OH received an expensive book - the box had somehow got soaking wet on its journey and had been put in a plastic bag (with the company logo on), and sealed with Christmas tape - no letter/label of apology. We didn't have to cut the tape on the box to open, we just peeled the box apart. 😞
This morning we saw a delivery person walk down our neighbours drive and throw 2 parcels over the 6 foot fence. 😞
The company on both occasions was ..... Royal Mail!
