Ebay's new buyer protection scam

So I have been a seller on and off her since June 2001, Over the years I have sent items recorded delivery that either never turn up , or arrive with no notification of delivery.  Now someone wants to charge a buyer a fee for safe delivery, when they would have been charged that in the P&P cost.  Frankly it sounds more like a scam than customer service and Ebay are also trying to force us to use their shipping option, So much for free enterprise, sound like trying to get the monopoly on delivery as well.  As for hanging on the sellers cash til 2 days after delivery, really so post office goes on strike and you don't get paid, Think I may start looking to leave. So much for eBay's loyalty to us .

They may have fixed it then. I'll have another look later.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

very few do not these days as so many have or are doing away with physical posting as a means of communication!   I have had 3 of my accounts now been declared paperless (so now i have to print off anything i want (which costs a fortune in ink/paper), may save the company some money but you can bet it will not be going to help defray customer bills!   Not saving the planet either...

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

You misunderstand what they are saying. I have already dropped the price on some of my listings by the buyer fee amount to bring it down so when ebay add the buyer fee the price is kept the same. So yes I am absorbing the fee in some cases and paying more in fees than when there were seller fees!

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

I am actually shocked they have done that now. After around 10 years ago they had put fees higher on people who listed items at 99p but then postage was £10 to avoid seller fees. Now they have gone and done similar, greed all around

Actually, the sellers who are serving those on a tight budget are the ones losing  out. My sales have dropped dramatically since this came into play.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

Hi there
'Buyers Protection Fee'.
By my thinking ebay have added it as mandatory and are attempting to sell this as a form of extra protection in a type of 'insurance' for Buyers so if their item is lost or damaged in the post, then ebay will refund the price paid.

However, if this is correct, then why when a Buyer makes a claim using this new BPF are their BPF costs refunded as well as the price they paid for the original item ? If BPF is being sold as 'insurance' cover, then the fee paid is a 'premium' for the service ebay say they are offering the Buyer.  By example, you take out insurance to cover your washing machine; when it goes wrong, an Engineer calls, repairs or replaces it under the terms of the cover, but you don't get your 'premiums' refunded when making a claim !!
But surely the main point has to be that this so called 'Buyers Protection Fee' is totally unnecessary as Buyers (and Sellers, for that matter) are already covered under the existing terms of the sale via ebay.  In addition, I send all parcels out via Royal Mail Tracked which provides more than adequate insurance cover for any lost or damaged parcels - that's why I pay the amount I do per parcel because of peace of mind that I as the Seller am covered for the costs of replacement should anything go wrong.
And finally the issue around pushing us into purchasing postage labels direct from ebay and yet offering no discount for doing this. If I'm correct, the cost of postage via Royal Mail is due to be reviewed next month (which means it will be increased, because we all know that postage costs only go one way, and that's UP !). So watch this space as I think this could be another excuse for ebay to grab more revenue, even by a few more pence per parcel. If this is the case then in future I will buy postage labels direct from the Royal Mail website and avoid the ebay link.

However, this is not an issue at present as my ebay sales have died a death since 04 Feb ... ....
I wonder why ?

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

Okay, i will be the first to put my head over the parapet!   Maybe become a proper business seller and then you will not have to pay all the fees, delays in payment (and in the future choice of delivery) that  a private seller does.

Oh dear, another victim of the 'Private Seller / Business Seller' trap, openly discussing their trade!

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

As a buyer of specialist collectable books, often from private sellers because many business book sellers won't (they say they can't!) answer questions. I know the right price for a book. eBay now add an extra 4%. This is not visible in the starting price (although I can do the arithmetic), but becomes more difficult to factor in when bidding competitively in the last few moments of an auction.  My buying price cap has not risen and will not rise by 4%, but will be reached earlier and I will drop out of an auction more quickly. Someone may buy. The seller will not get any more, but eBay will. If I do win (i.e. buy for less than my cap) the seller gets the same as they would have done before (their risk for using the auction format), but I will pay 4% more than I needed to for no obvious benefit.

I also sell similar books - but have never sold on eBay and will stick to my simple self-designed website with Royal Mail shipping.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

It's back to square one. In a slimy way. The buyer may seem to the seller to be paying the fee but they aren't. The buyer doesn't even see a fee cost on the listing just a few words saying it's included. My item won't sell at the price I want because with the buyer protection fee on top it makes it's overpriced. So I reduce my selling price (back to the level I would have received after fees before) so that the item sells. Nothing's changed.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

Not sure what is going on now!  I just relisted an auction that did not sell, and the auction has the BPF included.  I then just placed a second auction and it has not added the BPF!!!

eBay, what is going on???

It doesn’t always appear immediately. I’ve seen it show up after a few minutes. Rather flakey!

Except that the charges are higher now. There is a fixed standing charge (listing fee was previously waived) and there no fee discounts. Previously, there were frequent FVF discount offers.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

Absolutely agree! I am in the process of setting up another shop with an alternative selling platform where selling fees are fairer and small items do not attract punitive fees. I will be moving over all my items within the next few weeks and leaving eBay as a seller. In my opinion they should have included the option for buyers to opt in or out of the protection fee. If the buyer opts out they lose the right. Sellers should not be privy to a buyers decision to opt in or out in order to protect against rogue sellers. However, I’m well aware that this new buyer protection malarkey is actually nothing to do with protecting the buyer as there is nothing new apart from the release of funds. It’s really a means to clawing back money from sellers since the abolition of listing fees. IMO eBay have just shot themselves in the foot. The difference between Amazon and EBay was the unique 2nd hand/used pieces that you could source from private sellers. It was their pivotal USP.  Shame on you eBay.😔

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

So now we have an odd price showing rather than an increased rounded figure 🙄 I think buyers will refuse to pay it. What a rip off as your goods are already protected by the postal service.

I wasn't aware the 'postal service' covered you for item not as described cases!

Well, well.

Re: Ebay's new buyer protection scam

The postal service doesn't but eBay's Money Back Guarantee does and that continues to be provided free of charge so the BPF provides no "protection" and is just a buyer's fee.
