Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

Does anyone know why all of a sudden their are discount coupon codes on private sellers listings?

I have not authorised this discount, and just noticed when I listed an item today.

Do eBay cover the " shortfall?"

Or am I expected to take that hit?

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

I just ran off and had a look at my own listings (put them back on yesterday after 10 days off.....) and yes, I've got these reductions with a 'coupon code' as well.

Never seen these before in my 20 yr long ebaying life. Certainly didn't tick any boxes to make this happen.

So; how does it work?

Somebody more 'businessy' must know what is going on....?    i hope......

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

eBay make up the difference so it shouldn't cost you anything.

I do feel that it adds very slightly to the growing sense of desperation round here when they add these discounts to private seller's listings, but I suppose that needs must..

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

Thank you for taking the time to reply... I am not a business and this makes it look like my account is, even if eBay make up the difference it would have been nice if they asked first - I may use their platform but it is my items, my account, my sales listings... I feel like  the "control" on how to conduct my account is being " hijacked"...

Yes, Thank you kats, I wouldn't have known that.

It's a bit rich for ebay to do stuff  to your own private listings without telling you that they've done it,  or are *going* to do it or even how it works when they have done it!

eBays needs must I would have thought - perhaps they are feeling the pinch like their " customers" are?

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

I've noticed this too all week when searching eBay to buy stuff.

I saw 1 item that I liked for £8.00, then saw it said "get this item for £6.50 when you enter BALANCE5 at the checkout"

I thought, Oh go on then !... only when I go to the checkout and entered the code, it said something like "Sorry this offer can only be used with eBay balance"

So this is another gimmick to get people to leave money in their eBay wallets and use this money to buy stuff they like from eBay at a very slight discount providing you checkout and pay with your eBay balance !  😞

I suppose it's eBay's last attempt to try and  encourage sales to happen... but this could also cause frustration and disappoint buyers when they get told :-  you can only have a discount if you SELL STUFF ON EBAY and leave some money with eBay and pay using your eBay balance...  🙄

Just to add, You have to sell on eBay first before you can have money in your eBay balance, so these promo discount codes only work for sellers on eBay not for people who just buy now and again but never sell anything on eBay...

So basically these promotional coupon codes are for sellers to buy not for organic buyers... as it is only sellers who would have funds in their Ebay Balance, wouldn't they?

Edit to add... how frustrating for an organic buyer ( or anyone who has zero funds in balance) not being able to take advantage of the discounts?

False promises?

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

Yep,

Hence I just edited that post above a moment ago, as I just realised that there is actually no way of getting any money into your eBay balance unless you have sold something first on eBay !

Just a thought, but if eBay seriously really want this to work well for all buyers, they should give a option to add money to your eBay balance either by a card (credit or debit card) or by instant bank transfer. Then this would work well and people would buy more from eBay instead of just side stepping away because of anger due to the discount code only working from the eBay balance which now solely relies on eBay sales money...

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

I am not sure that is the answer - I for one would never choose to transfer funds for eBay to hold on a whim that some promotion may just be on an  item I am looking for ...  plus I think there would be  financial/ banking rules/ implications for eBay ( unsure of this)

I think the question is WHY?

Why are eBay encouraging sellers to purchase using their funds balance?

Why are these discounts not available to organic buyers i.e everyone ?

You're right, I forgot that a lot of people were very funny about having to give eBay their bank details when Managed Payments was first introduced... So how could they now be expected to transfer money to eBay ! and if an eBay account should get hacked well that would be like leaving the front door wide open to be robbed !

I just bought a £13.60 item and just ignored eBay's offer of getting it for £12.90 !

If a buyer really wants the item and they are really serious, they will still buy it at the full asking price and be done with it...   I just did ! 🙂

There's nowt so queer as folk! I'm sure ebay really appreciated you letting them keep that extra 70p!

I think the reason for this offer is that when free selling/ebay Balance was introduced, ebay said that it would mean more sales for all sellers.  There have been many comments on the boards, especially from business sellers, saying that they have not seen this promised rise in sales.  Ebay are just trying to do their part by pushing payment from your balance as much as possible. Neither they, nor sellers (business and private) want that money spent off ebay, they want to try and keep it on here.

All of you complaining on here about it are sellers - do you not want ebay to try and get you extra sales?

I used my offer - I have always been about paying ebay as little as possible, nice to think my little buy lost them 60p!

Ebay are encouraging sellers to use their balance to keep the money on ebay/with ebay sellers.

As to why are the discounts not available to everyone - fairly simple,  they are there to encourage sellers to use their balance and keep that money on ebay.

That makes good sense.

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

This could be very counter-productive & alienate many buyers who cannot take advantage of the offer because they do not keep a credit balance in their eBay accounts. No one likes to be excluded - it is not a Public School system.

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

I posted this in another thread as well that touched on this subject among others, but thought it might be useful to copy it here too since this thread is specifically about this coupon.

The reason eBay has tied it to using your balance is it helps boost a particular metric that matters to them (and their investors). For ~4 years now, current eBay management has been pushing their "enthusiast buyer, focus vertical strategy" (the reason for all the emphasis on sneakers, trading cards, handbags, watches, Motors, etc.) and has been desperately trying to convince investors this strategy is working.

Toward that purpose, eBay has defined "enthusiast buyers" as those who shop on eBay at least 6 times per year, spend at least $800 per year or those who also sell on the site.

The idea was originally cooked up as a way to counter concerns that overall Active Buyer stats had dropped significantly to below Q1 2018 levels.

ebayactivebuyersq324 (1).jpg

By designating some segment as "high value enthusiast buyers" and showing growth in that segment due to authentication programs, additional marketing campaigns etc., eBay was able to to spin the story such that while yes, they may be losing some buyers, those were mostly buyers who only shopped very rarely, didn't spend much money etc. and therefor their loss is no big deal because the truly "valuable" buyers are still shopping here and growing.

And that worked, for a while in 2021-2022 when that segment was still growing on eBay with not insignificant help from the larger pandemic ecommerce boom.

But in Q4 2022, the number of "enthusiast buyers" dropped from ~17 Million to ~16 Million - which is where it has stayed since.

Slide from Q3 2024 earnings presentation:

2024-10-30_16-40-40 (1).jpg

The fact that "enthusiast buyers" has been stagnant for almost 2 years now has started to raise investor concerns that eBay may have gotten all the extra value out of the "focus vertical strategy" that they could and they've hit the wall in terms of growth in that area.

So eBay is under pressure to make that "enthusiast buyer" stat go back up on the Q4 report and very specific discounts that push the buttons to count for that stat are the fastest way to do it - meaning the offer has to be something that will increase the number of repeat purchases, increase spend to at least $800 per year or convert sellers into buyers.

Driving repeat purchases within such a short period of time is the more difficult of the 3 criteria - people who have only bought once or twice through the whole year are going to need a big push to get them to buy 4-5 more times in 3 months, even if that is slightly helped by the holiday gift giving season.

Increasing amount spent is a little easier, but more likely to be targeted at new consumer goods items or electronics refurbished by authorized sellers - and in the US at least I've seen eBay working in conjunction with those kinds of sellers to offer discounts based on pricing tiers that are definitely geared toward getting people to make higher dollar purchases to "save" more.

But that is a double edged sword as investors are also sensitive to heavy discounting as it was a favored tactic of previous eBay leadership that proved to be pretty disastrous for a bunch of reasons I won't get into here because this is already long enough 😂.

So that leaves the last criteria - buyers who also sell - and eBay has apparently found ways to pull that lever to convert some of the new consumer to consumer/private sellers on the platform into buyers, magically increasing the "enthusiast buyer" rate for the next report.

In the US, where Spendable Funds/eBay Balance is not mandatory, they've done it by offering coupons like this:

valueaddedresource_3-1735655967055.jpeg

In the UK where they've mandated eBay Balance for private C2C sellers, it's much simpler - just tie the coupon to using eBay Balance which can only be gained by being a seller and again, magically the number of "enthusiast buyers" goes up.

It's all shell game really but that along with the additional $3B in stock buybacks will probably be enough to keep investors relatively happy for at least another quarter.

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

I just logged onto my account after being sent an offer for a cardigan and low & behold the ad also now has this coupon code 😮, I was just about to post a question in here about it myself as I don't remember ticking any boxes to add it.  Am reading through all the responses you got but it's all double dutch to me ...🙄  If you figure it out - can you let ME know? 😁

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

Just this moment I received an email from eBay saying the seller has sent you an offer !

The item is £99.00 and the seller (or was it eBay ??) had sent me an offer for just £59.40 !... Well I visited the listing just for the sake of it !... and it says on the listing "get this item for £94.05 with coupon code"

This is so hilarious ! ..so seller sends me an £40 off offer from their buy it now item which I can use and pay by any payment option listed in the eBay checkout... but when eBay gives me only £5 off discount, they tell me that I can only use this offer if I pay with my eBay balance ?  Eh ?... someone's having a laugh aren't they ?? ! 🙄

Re: Coupon Codes on Private Sellers Listings?

My head just exploded .... 🤣 what the hell is going on? I just wish Ebay ASKED first before messing with my listings .... whenever I get paid by Ebay for my stuff I remove the amount as soon as possible, I don't want my money sitting in wherever it is, I still don't understand why it's only people with money sat with Ebay who qualify for these coupons, doesn't seem fair.
