Cancelled order

Hi. I listed an item for collection. A buyer bought it before asking me of its condition and when he can collect. He then said that because i am away this week, he needs to cancel the purchase. He is saying that i need to have included the information on when i am away and that it's my problem for not having done so.

If i allow the cancellation, ebay says that i'll have to pay the re-listing fees. i can't find information on which fees ebay would apply and how much that would be.

i asked the buyer to cover such fees as i believe he basically changed his mind and i don't normally accept returns. he is refusing because he says i should have included my availability. it seems quite strange, because some items stay listed for long periods of time and i can't imagine i'd have to update my availability every time i am away.

any recommendations on how i can handle this? thanks a lot!

Cancelled order

This original poster has a legitimate question as something similar happened to me a couple of weeks back. I had a request to cancel an order as the seller stated they misread the price on a Buy-It-Now. LOL.

I was all set to cancel and relist, but then noticed the option was to cancel and re-list with fees. I thought this was strange. I could not figure out what fees were being referred to and I wasn’t readily prepared to cancel and re-list due to the buyer’s mistake. In the end, I cancelled the order and there were no fees assessed. It is strange the cancellation and re-listing is prompts this wording.

I did have an annoyance from this cancellation. The money the buyer paid was deducted from my eBay balance for the refund though I had not actually received the funds to start as the item had not been shipped and delivered.

Listing fees? I thought it was 'free to sell' ....

Surely there are no fees for you to have to cover?

Did you have more than the basics on your listing? like a second 'title' , or promotion/sponsoring of some sort?

(Yes I know that's more questions then answers 😂,  but we need a liitle more info ! )

There's nothing to be gained by not cancelling.

If it's the games table that was sold on a fixed price Buy It Now listing there would be no listing fee there, so you won't lose out.

It probably is worth mentioning when you're around for collection though when you relist. If the buyer bought and paid on Saturday April 12th and you're away all this week I definitely would've mentioned that.

Good Afternoon

As a private seller there are no fees involved in selling, consequently I don't understand this situation whereby you think that there are.  Simply cancel as requested  and relist and Bob's your uncle'.

Your buyer may have a point if you were going away then it's always best to include this information on the listing.  Be careful how you word it for safety and security reasons it's wise not to divulge too much info ie like advertising the fact that you will be away from home for a period, just say that for personal reasons you are not available between certain dates.

Additionally go on to say something along the lines of collection should be within 7 days of the auction end at

a mutually acceptable day and time.

Finally do describe the condition, this is important.

Good luck with the relist/sale.

PS. All of that said I do feel that your buyer is being a tad unreasonable ie if a buyer wants something badly enough and he bought the item then waiting an extra 7 days shouldn't be too much of a problem. I sense that maybe he lost his enthusiasm and is looking for an 'out'.

Sorry but I side with your buyer on this as you should really have mentioned you'd be away. Asking for fees is asking for unfavourable feedback. I'd apologise profusely if I were you and just cancel it. Shouldn't be any fees involved anyway.

Tbf if i buy an item, the seller going away for a week would be a bit wierd lol. Should have put yourself on vacation mode or a scheduled listing.

Thanks Cockleboo. I had to get thru to helpdesk and they confirmed there would be no fees but the button does say ‘relist with fees’.

I am not an active or experienced seller so for it’s a bit of a bother and I think the buyer just changed his mind. But anyway now cancelled

1.  There is a Time Away setting, you can leave your listings running but it flags up to potential buyers when you are away by putting a banner at the top of your listings.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/vac/timeaway

2.  I suspect the "re-list with fees" wording should read "re-list with fees if applicable"! Business sellers may pay listing fees, currently private sellers don't. Should Ebay change it to separate out Business and Private sellers and give them different messages? Yes, probably, but probably not high on the priority list.

That’s great. I am relatively experienced on eBay and still was surprised at the wording when I had the cancellation request. I rarely have cancellation requests and thought to myself ‘why should I pay a fee for what admittedly was the buyer’s mistake?’

As many have mentioned, make sure you utilize the ‘time away setting’ when away. You probably weren’t aware of this setting, but I’m sure you’ll never forget about it now. 😅
