Bladed items

Think Ebay are just annoying members now for the sake of it. Bearing in mind I don't list bladed items! I have just received an email from Ebay, posted part of it below:

Since you’re listing bladed items on ebay, we’re writing to let you know about some upcoming new requirements. From 11 March 2025, we’re expanding and strengthening buyer age-verification requirements for bladed items to ensure only people aged 18 or older are able to purchase and receive them. This protects both buyers and sellers, provides safety and reassurance, and helps keep you legally compliant.

A pickaxe may well fall under the general bladed articles regulations that are UK wide. The regulations just state that axes fall under the bladed products. They don't make any dispensation for pick axe. Hoe and planer might just fall under ebays more stringent application of the policy.

As for other marketplaces - for the axe, no matter where you sell it, age verification is supposed to take place at the point of sale and the point of delivery. ebay apply this via credit card - other marketplaces might use other methods.

I think you have to be “creative” with categories.
I’ve just sold some vintage chisels, two vintage hand planes and an electric fret saw without issue - but a vintage coping saw needs age verification…!

I’ve yet to sell a bandsaw which like your axe will need collecting, but I’ve see others on here listed as collection only, so I can only assume they must be listed in a ‘safe’ category (haven’t checked yet).

Age verification postage for my coping saw isn’t too big a deal as adds about £3 to postage, but the bandsaw will be a nightmare to pack and post plus weighs 20+ kgs.
I’d struggle find a big enough box…!

……just to qualify my statement. I’m not saying deliberately list something incorrectly and potentially break the law. More look for a category that perfectly reasonably and legally lets you list your hoe and planers.

The axe is a different story unfortunately. You might be able to sell it at a car boot sale though? The regs are aimed at online sales.

They are not complying with any law when they apply this restriction to hedge trimmers, food processors, nail clippers etc., that's just plain daft and annoying.

You also need a licence to sell alcohol. I have a bottle of white wine from 1985, and a can of beer from 1988, but I cannot sell them, undrinkable as they are, without a licence.

That reminds me of trying to buy a knife sharpener, yeras ago. I was told I would need to register a credit card. Phoned and the conversation went - ' You need to be 18 to buy a knife',  (American accent) 'but it's a knife sharpener', 'you need to be 18 to buy a knife'  'but it's a knife sharpener', 'you need to be 18 to buy a knife'  and so on until I gave up.

There might be another reason you cannot list a 'hoe' on ebay  🙂

Its a pick-axe not an axe, a fairly blunt tool and a lot less dangerous than a screwdriver or hammer. It's going out on a different platform.

Yep, had a listing removed for a vintage bottle of rum (over 100 years old and corked), not allowed to sell it unless I empty it out.

I agree, recently sold hammers and screwdrivers which are potentially more dangerous.

Hope you sell it ok.
