Anyone else received a "you're pre-qualified for £1,500!" Message from E-Bay Capital today?

As the opening line of the actual message is "......grow your business with flexible financing options....." and I'm not a business and have no interest in becoming one, it shows how 'off message' E-Bay have become.

Now while you'll rightly say "well just ignore it", the problem is it tells scammers just how bad E-Bays internal systems are, although in fairness there's ample evidence of that elsewhere anyway.

Is that an eBay message directly sent to you, or just a banner ad?

Yeh and when i apply i get declined yet they keep pushing it. Annoying. It's Youlend which no doubt ebay get a cut of, again sketching on the edge of UK law.

We'll they are probably breaking the law (although not my area of expertise) as they're sending these to private sellers, but in the 'detail' it talks about sellers 'shop' and number of 'business transactions' as the basis of the pre-approval, so if they were pulled up on it I'm sure would claim it was an error in who it was sent to.

Also, possibly (although I have no proof), their deal with 'Youlend' is based on a certain number of accounts receiving the Message and the take up rate, which would remove their inhibitions to target it properly.

I get similar contact from ebay every few months offering me a loan to help increase sales on my private seller account. It's a nonsense and the last thing I would want to do is to buy something with the intent to resell it as it's enough bother already clearing my own junk.

That's totally sloppy of them then if they've sent that to a private eBay selling account.

They do it regularly. The one they sent me today on my private (only) account had

  • "you're pre-approved for £1,000"
  • "Based on your eBay sales volumes, we're pleased to inform you that you've been pre‑approved for £1,000"
  • "The pre‑approved offer is an estimate based on the eBay store connected to your email address. Offers may change or expire."

I don't even have an ebay store but I'm guessing they mean the loan offer is tied to my private account.

That's all so weird, I've never received this kind of stuff, but may have my account requirements sent to block them, I haven't checked for years.
